I think it would depend on what type of position you're seeking in state government. Unless it's in the professional field, such as a social worker, (MSW) or in the administrative field (MBA), I don't think a degree is required. I worked for state government in criminal justice and the courts for 34 years as an administrative assistant, and didn't need a degree. You might have to take a civil service exam or an aptitude test, however. The best way to find out for sure, is to contact your state personnel department. They can tell you in a heartbeat. They use Sociologist, Psychologist, and various other types including administrative and business also criminal Justice degrees. It just depends on what your preferences are. Check with your state's department of Health and Human Services.

Depends on the State. There are jobs that only require an Associates. There are Food Stamp workers that started out at the front desk and just advanced up the ladder with no schooling.

it matters.... what position? Mostly business administration.. but it matters what you want to apply for because there are many state and human services occupations.
