I did that as a science fair project once--it varied from around 90 to thousands! It depends on the person's mouth, how hard they lick, how much they, really, slobber, etc. Sounds weird, but it's true! It doesn't have anything to do with your gender or age, though, because mouth chemistry varies so much. I ended up just averaging it out, but I'm not quite sure of the number anymore.
As for it being a controversy, I don't think it is--people just like to wonder about it, and a lot of people have tried it. Everyone's got their own answer, but very few people consider averages! I think I'm going to do it again sometime, but with a lottttt more people--it'll make the results more genuine, as will a set of guidelines. Doesn't THAT sound weird? I was unaware that it was causing controversies but, the answer was solved over 25 years ago when the commercial came out. It was a cartoon commercial with characters wondering how many licks it would take to get to the center of a tootsie pop. It started a rash of kids going out to buy tootsie pops and find out for themselves. (Good marketing strategy huh?) Well, as it turns out, some kids could really lick the thing. Other kids weren't so good at it. In other words....it was different for everyone. The chubby kid who did nothing but eat candy all day, well, he was pretty good at it. The little girl down the street whose parents only let her have a "lolly pop" once a week, well, she wasn't so good at it. Get it?.....All it was, was a marketing strategy. And a good one at that. For the few years on Saturday mornings when those commercials aired the most......Tootsie Pop sales were through the roof! Still, the outcome was different for everyone. So, how many licks does it take? Give it a try......find out your number.

I watched the comercial when i was like 8 yearsold im in my mid 20's now and since then i have counted between 150 and 175 licks

my sis and I both tried this like 5 years ago. i ended up eating mine since i got impatient. my sister made it to like 2000 licks before she lost patience as well. so, i would think somewhere between 3000-5000 licks depending on the licker and the amount of tongue you use to lick. i hope that this answers your question. ~
