swimmer's ear usually happens because the ear canal stays damp and bacteria grow easily. To prevent it, use a hair dryer after getting head and ears wet, and blow it also into the ear canal to dry it. Then the risk of reinfection is lower. After I shower and wash my hair, I take a piece of paper,, either paper towel, or a couple of thicknesses of toilet paper and hold it to my ear canal while the water drains out,, then I blow it a bit while I am drying my hair. I have had no problem since I've been doing that.

As for using the rest of the medicine you have.. it is probably an anitbiotic, right? if it is, then you shouldn't have any left. You must use all of the antibiotic that a doctor gives you, or the germs are not all killed and the infection can come back. Now, if you have some left, it is probably not enough to do the trick. Best to go see the doctor again,,, get treated and this time finish all of the medicine that the doctor tells you to, and then do the preventative measures above.

Herbal remedies

Native Americans used mullein (Verbascum thapsus) oil to treat minor inflammations. To ease the discomfort of swimmer's ear, 1-3 drops of a mullein preparation may be placed in the ear every three hours
