I never heard of that phrase but I would say that to "think outside the cross" would mean to take the easy way out.

Life has its crosses for us to bear, and we must bear them to grow as Christians. When we let Jesus Christ help us bear the cross, we walk with Him. He in turn will guide us with His sanctifying grace.
WE must look to the cross for our strength because it is through the cross that sin was conquered by Christ.

Just think of what would have happened if it wen't for the cross, where He defeated Satan, died for our Sins, restored our souls, renewed our body. The cross has conquered it all for us. Think outside the cross.

I would think it means to see the broader message of Jesus and not confine his whole life to the event of the crucifixion where, although it's been interpreted as a loving sacrifice for man's sins, it can be overly dwelled on where the suffering of Jesus is the only focus.

beekay said it best so far. I was going to say it means "be a fool", but beekay's got a better demeanor and better language. I'm just blunt and to-the-point. God Bless you.

Not letting christian ideology rule your thinking. Learn it if you feel you want to, for education is never a bad thing, but don't let it assimilate you.
