I always put mine in Reverse gear
it is a lower gear and will keep the car from rolling.
If you put the car in 4th or 5ht you take the chance of it rolling ahead or backwards and hitting something or someone.
I try not to use the e-brake much where Im from cause the snow and ice will freeze the cable and than the brakes will not release

It does not have to be in first gear, it can be in any gear. When parking a manual transmission, you should always use the parking brake and a gear. If parking downhill, I put the parking brake on and keep the gear in reverse, parking uphill, I use the parking brake and put it in any forward gear. Why? If my parking brake fails, hopefully being in gear will keep it from rolling. If you have a vehicle that tends to jump out of gear, a frequently tested and adjusted parking brake will keep it from rolling away.

they should be. its a compression thing. Lowest gear-reverse would work just as well- more stress on the moter to keep the cr from rolling. hand brakes are sometimes rusty and may not release when you are ready to go depending on the age of the car. Just a good idea anyhow.

You have to put it in a gear because the brake could fail and if it's in gear and the brake fails the car won't roll.

It is a very low gear and they will not tend to roll. The engine will brake the car.

They have to be locked in reverse so the car can't roll if the parking brake is not set or lets go.

they dont have to be... use the parking break to park and leave it in neutral or put it in any gear dont have to be first. you do this because when its engaged and the motor is off the car wont just roll away

I hook it on second gear. I'm just used to it as a support to the hand break in case something wrong happens to the hand break while I'm gone. :-)
