Absolutely go to a professional!! There are SO MANY factors that need to be taken into serious consideration before a dog can be trained in that way.Do not attempt this yourself! You may need to get an additional dog that is an appropriately protective breed and learn how to handle it once its been trained. There is no simple answer, unfortunately.Talk to several specialists in attack training and get an overveiw.Research extensively ahead of time and prepare all your questions in advance. Then be sure to take the advice they give you! Good Luck!!

The problem with this is, once a dog is taught to attack, it always will. I hope you do not have children in the house, or anywhere near your house. Why would you want to teach you dog to be mean? I don't get it.
Try getting an alarm for the house, and enjoy your pet!
A dog shouldn't be treated as the alarm system!!!

Well mostly big dogs are good gaurd dogs, but i have my secret weapon, my 3lb female chihuahua. Nobody protects my house better than her, not even my male doberman and german shepherd. But please dont just get a dog for protection. If your dog starts barking at the door then praise him and get him excited. Then he'll bark a lot if a person tries to break in. But you can just get a Brinks or ATT home securtiy system if your house has gotten broken into. Probably better than making your dog aggressive to everyone.

There are specialized schools for GUARD dogs run by former policemen and military personnel. The training for this is very rigorous and technical and should only be done by a professional.

Get a security system instead... Don't train your dog to be an attack dog..
In many states you are liable for your dog if it bites anyone regardless if they have broken into your home or not..

Talk to a trainer. This needs to be done by a professional, that's if it is cut OK to be a guard dog . Not all dogs are.

first of all, what kind of breed is your dog?
because some kinds of dog breed are just not meant to be guard dogs (pug), and some other ones like the rotty and german sheppard were bred for guarding.
it may be harder to "train" your dog to guard if its already full grown, since it's easier to train the younger the dog.
but i'm not saying that it's impossible to "guard train" your dog. There are many dog-training places (obedience and whatnot) that can help you train your dog to guard your house. There are also plenty of books out there to help train your dog (but some of them are good, and some of them are bad).
and another way, its to simply talk to your dog's vet (or a local shelter/ vet/ kennel) and see where they would recommend you to train your dog to guard your house.
and if you're scared of getting broken into again, get an alarm system for your house....

I would get an American pit bull terrier(they are born naturally protective-you do NOT have to teach them)or the like. Do some research on the web regarding dogs that are protective. Or have your dog taken to a professional trainer.

look up dog trainers in the phone book, getting a professional could teach you how to train the dog to intimidate people but not make him vicious to you
