Suicide (self-murder) is a violation of the Commandment not to murder and therefore predates Christianity.
Catholics believe suicide when committed in full knowledge and deliberate consent is a complete turning away from God (a mortal sin) and will send a person to hell.
There are 3 conditions of a mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent.
While suicide (or any kind of murder) is always a grave matter, people who commit suicide may not always have full knowledge of what they're doing. Drugs can definitely impair one's thinking, as can other things, such as diseases, intense pain, or anguish.
Therefore, suicide is not automatically treated as a mortal sin.
We are commanded by Christ not to judge others so we leave final judgment to God who alone knows each person's heart.
With love in Christ.

Perhaps it has nothing to do with the bible at all. Look at it this way it is a blessing we are all here, the lord put us here to do a job that he has planned for us. maybe it is because committing suicide is a totally a SELFISH act. You are not thinking of how it might affect the people around you. We are to find consolation in the lord to trust that he will take care of the problems that we have,(this is very hard) to put people in our way who will help us out . He says that he has put everything here at our time to help us achieve. Now i think what we as Christians forget is that there is a war going on, and the devil doesn't want us to succeed, for he knows we all have a plan that is in us to throw a wench in his plan we're like foot soldiers for Christ. he never promised it would be easy, especially for us since when you give your life to Jesus you are pulled into the light, and now you can see the war. Plus you are committing murder even if it is your own. These are just some of my thoughts on the manner not backed up by any scripture.

If you want the historical answer, the reason is that in the early centuries of the Christian church, Christians were committing suicide in large numbers, because they wanted to get to Jesus as soon as possible. The church leaders couldn't have all their followers dying, so they made suicide a sin to stop people from doing it.

In some cultures throughout history, suicide has been considered honorable when conditions dictate. Continuing to live after you've commited a grievous act was considered a sin.

The taking of a life, period, is a sin. To take our own life is to essentially deny that GOD is our GOD. We do not have the right to decide our death, in my opinion. How do you know what you claim? Judas' biggest sin was not necessarily suicide but denying the Lord and who He was and delivering Him to the rulers.
The criminal on the cross was forgiven and accepted by Jesus by his confession. Judas denied Jesus in his earthly life, by delivering Him to the rulers, by not repenting and then he took his own life.
What is murder but planned killing of another human; suicide is the planned killing of oneself. I have sympathy and compassion for those who are tempted or do commit suicide.
Each suicide is a cry against our society and its failure to care for those who are in need of help.

I agree with the first response. Suicide is a sin that you can't repent of because you are dead. I also think suicide is a sin because it is done through selfish motives. People who commit suicide don't often think about the effects their self inflicted death with cause upon the people in their life. We must also remember that we are not our own. The bible tells us that we do not belong to ourselves but to God. We did not create ourselves, He created us, and so when we kill ourselves we are telling God that we're not happy with what he has created, that it is imperfect and therefore his plan for our life is flawed. That, to me, is true selfishness, not caring about what God thinks but thinking that our own motives are better. Therefore, to me, suicide is a sin.

I'm not a believer, so I have no answer for you... But I just wanted to comment that I wish such an awful opinion would stop though. Personally it is heartless toward people who were in such pain that they would do such a thing. They should be cared about not given hatred.

Your life on this earth determines your life in the next. Saying that you know for sure where somebody goes in the next life based on a single act is not really relevant.
Swedenborg states "a perception of the sphere of falsity from evil that flows forth from hell has often been granted me. It was like a perpetual effort to destroy all that is good and true, combined with anger and a kind of fury at not being able to do so, especially an effort to annihilate and destroy the Divine of the Lord, and this because all good and truth are from Him. But out of heaven a sphere of truth and good was perceived, whereby the fury of the effort ascending from hell was restrained. The result of this was an equilibrium. This sphere from heaven was perceived to come from the Lord alone, although it appeared to come from the angels in heaven. It is from the Lord alone, and not from the angels, because every angel in heaven acknowledges that nothing of good and truth is from himself, but all is from the Lord" (Heaven and Hell n. 538).

I do not think of it in religious terms, but I think it is wrong anyways, a sin, you might call it. suicide is the ultimate insult to everyone and everything, because you are saying that it is not enough, and you are willing to cause others grief without any regard for their feelings. suicide means that no matter what everyone else has done for you, you will selfishly put another burden upon them.

In Islam also the same thing... I think it's because both religions believe life and death is in God's hand, therefore anyone who is trying to end their lives before its time are messing with God. And mesing with God is never good.
