This might be an unusual question, but since everyone is talking about suicide bombers in Iraq, I thought I'd ask: Did the Viet Cong ever used suicide bombers while fighting American soldiers? Were children used by the Viet Cong to confront U.S. or South Vietnamese soldiers?

in certain situations when there was a large gathering of our troops, and if the Viet Cong desperately wanted to penetrate our defense perimeter, they would resort to the use of suicide squads. As to the use of children; they were used as the eyes and ears of the Viet Cong. These children and women would gather information during the day as to our perimeter defense and reported them to the village Viet Cong during the night. As a matter of fact, we even hired many of them in the PX, Mess halls, laundries, etc..so they had a Birdseye view of our activities.

I believe I read somewhere, where they would attach a bomb of sorts to a child and send the child up to American soldiers. As to suicide bombers I don't remember reading anything about that.

Yes, they were. One instance where an American child was captured and was placed on a mine. When a passing squad of soldiers went to lift her up, the mine went off killing seven. Search for it on the net if you don't believe me. It is there as I saw it during my tour.

Yes. True Patriot's words are true as well. Children, carrying hand grenades toward groups of American GIs, was common.

I was there too.

yes - they were called sappers. they run into a place and explode while holding the bomb.

as to using children - yes again. a friend of mine used a machine gun - he was on a plastic patrol boat - to protect his crew members. he got a medical discharge and is a basket case to this day.
