I have a Sheltie. Her name is Odie. She is over 15 years old, In May is had a severe Syncope attack. I took her to the vet's and she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and acute kidney failure. I asked him what I can do for her? He told me that all that can be done is to make her comfortable while dying. It is now mid August and she is still going strong. I went against everyone's advice and continued to follow the vet's treatment. I religiously give her Sub Q water treatments twice a week, she takes twice daily to different types of diuretic, a pill for nausea, pepcid AC, and a heart pill. Plus I searched on the net and learned that she needed to drink purified water. I also learned that fish oil and CO 10 Q are specific for the healing of the kidney. My point is that my entire days of the last months have been devoted to keeping her comfortable. My reward has been three more precious months with my BEST FRIEND and the love of my life. You are exactly right!!!!!!!!!until a person has opened their heart to receive the love of a "dog" and know the loyalty and the compassion they have to share......there isn't any way that they can know what it is that we are talking about. As far as I am concerned Odie is my family!!

Yes! But the thing is, dont just only give your dog love. You may not agree with this, but dogs like having discipline and rules and boundaries. Dogs also like it when there is already a pack leader in the family because if nobody would take that role, then they become dominiant and dog/people aggressive.

I choose not to ever have children (along with my fiance) and our pets are what we chose over children or babies. Some people think that human children/babies are only worthy of unconditional love, but I love my pets the way many people talk about loving their kids.
Not every woman is meant to have or love babies/children, and I love my dogs and cats more than I could ever love a child.

I have to say that my pets have been part of the family and I've mourned wheny they died. I may not want to have kids but I'd be okay to have some "baby dogs"
FYI check out all the research about the health benefits of pets. The uncondtional love is powerful.

Absolutely. I have a white shepherd (in picture) who is a therapy dog. I have a shih-tzu who is my shadow, I have an 18 yr old blue heeler, a rat terrier, and a german short haired pointer. They are all spoile rotten. YES I hate it when people say that. I'm visiting my mom now with my shih-tzu she told Tuffy today she was glad she was her granddog. I thought that was cute. I'm 47 and never had kids. My dogs are my kids.

I agree. My dogs are almost like my children. Not quite, it's different, but I love them and talk to them, and some people think that's pretty weird. I think they're just missing out.

Dogs are more then just dogs, they are true companions. We usually spend more time and money on our pets then are own children. I don't know about anyone else, but everyone I know who has lost a pet mourns for it just like it were a close relative that died.
