Britax exceeds US safety standards. They are on the expensive side though.

As long as the seat meets current standards (should say on the box or on stickers on the actual seat), the brand doesn't matter. If it is a good fit to the vehicle and puts you where you need to be to have the seat belt fit correctly (across the shoulder and lap belt low and across hips), any kind will work. Backless or not depends on where your head hits the back of the seat. If the seat hits lower than the top of your ears, you need a booster with a back so you have good head and neck support in case of a crash.
