I think it is do mostly to urbanization: when I lived in the country I was very skinny, but when I moved to Lexington (KY) at age 11 my weight doubled w/i 2 years (80 to 160). In the country there is always some physical activity to do, whereas in the city p.a. requires setting aside time for it. What do you think?

FYI I currently don't have a weight problem but that's mostly I now burn alot of calories at work..but I'm just saying that raising kids in a city isn't condusive to getting exercise.

"Blame it on the bossa nova!" (Line from an old song!) But seriously, it has a hidden cause, as well. It is the way we were brought up. Do you realize how many people in the United States were brought up by their parents to EAT EVERYTHING ON YOUR PLATE, OR ELSE - ? Portion control. I have done it myself. They bring you this chunk of chicken and french fries, and you just go for the gold. Good-bye common sense, hello fat city. It's awful. And try to stop doing it! It takes everything you can find inside yourself to show some good sense when you sit down to food in this country. I have just switched over to salads, and if it weren't for the great ranch dressing (which probably has enough calories to make up the difference), I'd still be scarffing down greasy french fries (saturated until they are a kind of translucent light brown instead of crispy yellow) and downing extra large Cokes. Habit. That is the next hidden one. We are creatures of habit. Tell someone they are going to have a salad instead of a 2-lb. burger and they just look at you. Some people have an awful time with this stuff. I have cut back. Those of us who still have a little self-control left to bring to this problem use cutting back. Less every day. They serve us this soup bowl of pudding at the end of the meal. It should be about 4 ounces, or half a tumbler full. Not a soup bowl, for gosh sakes! I mean, the next time you're lucky enough to be eating in a restaurant, notice the size of the portions that get dumped in front of you. And this is supposedly a "normal" serving. I finally figured it out: if I don't put it in, I won't wear it. This is my entire philosophy of losing weight. Another thing which will keep you fat is to obsess about it all the time. I mean, for God's sake, have some vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet, will you? Relax! (Steve, our waiter, brought that to us yesterday - the two ice creams together in a small bowl. Vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet. It was dynamite. Forget about the weight. Good bye ice cream. Remember "Creamcycles?" Well, like that.) Thank you for plowing through all this. Solution: don't eat quite so much every day and move around a little more, both of which you are probably smart enough to be doing already! Sent with good energies from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. (I am 63 years old.)

Obesity seems to be a complex problem in the US.
Mainly it appears to me - due to the fact that we have an abundance of food especially sweets and foods that have multiple preservatives. From an early age children are rewarded for good behavior with a cookie instead of an apple. Also many children and adults don't exercise, those living in the city have subways, cars and taxis .
People just don't walk unless they HAVE TO - if they can't ride they sit and wait usually in front of the tv or computer and most of the time with something to eat or drink close at hand.

It's portions. If you go to Europe the portions served are smaller. Here, everything is super size, and eating at a restaurant you get enough food for 3 meals.
