I've recently been diagnosed with asthma and where I live asthma is rampant (air quality must be contributing to it).
So...since I've been considering moving to the Portland area, I must consider its air quality. What's it like?

The air quality smogwise is typically pretty good. But, we get a lot of rain, so ify ou are dampness triggered, then if MAY be problematic. With that rain comes a ton of greenery. Those plants then release pollen and things. If you are 'hay fever' activated, then the Portland areas may not be great for you.

Typically asthmatics move to someplace dry like Phoenix or Tucson, if they have to move for asthma and breathing problems. However, it's not like no asthmatics live in Portland. If your asthma can be controlled via things like Singular and Advair and Albuterol, then you can certainly thrive there. Talk with your pulminologist about his thoughts on what your triggers are and if Portland may be good for you. It's a beautiful area. : )

If you are considering Portland, Oregon, you probably ought to reconsider the decision. Portland is at the northern end of the Willamette Valley. This area is the nation's leading producer of grass seed, Christmas trees and nursery stock. Something like 6 out of 10 of the worst cities in the nation for Hay Fever sufferers are in this region. I know. I live here and I suffer from Hay Fever.

If your asthma is triggered at all by plant pollens, this area will probably make you very uncomfortable from Spring through Fall. During the winter, we get rain. So if your asthma is affected by high humidity or mold, this area will probably make you uncomfortable the rest of the year.

The part of Oregon east of the Cascade Range is officially a desert (less than 9-inches of rain a year). That climate may be more comfortable for you, and it could leave you close enough to Portland to enjoy it's benefits during occassional visits.

If you're looking for a city that is good for asthma sufferers, try somewhere dry like Denver. Of course, the altitude in Denver takes a lot of getting used to, but once you're acclimated, it can be very good.
