they just won't give you "non-critical" patches, which might affect your computer's security to a small degree.

They will continue cracking down on fraudulent serial numbers. However, if you got it with your computer, or you have a disk the "is this copy legal?" thing doesn't show but has an authentic "genuine microsoft" thing (eg. Microsoft Department Of Licensing: Student 2004: Windows XP SP2), it's not illegal at all.

it is illegal my self and my staff at the admin office here at microsoft do not have anything illegal on there system it is the against law .also there are microsoft staff online And you cant make illegal copies of all microsoft products

Currently, Mycrosoft does not pursue end-users with pirates copies of Windows. But you better buy Windows Vista you will be safer

If your computer is connected to the internet always... then bet your life it will eventually act up and freeze or die a slow death. So the smart thing to do is to disconnect your network connection (the 2 little blinking computers at bottom right of your screens) when you do not need or are not using your internet connection.
