I know this has already been answered correctly, but I want the 2 points, so here it goes. There WAS one language until the pride of man provoked God at the Tower of Babel.

God confused the language at the Tower of Babel. As time goes by many new words are added to languages and old ones dropped. Just take a look at the English language. It has gone through some serious changes in the last few hundred years.

Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
Gen 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people [is] one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
Gen 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
Gen 11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Gen 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth

Language started with the first human populations in Africa millions of years ago. There are so many of them because so many different populations were isolated for many many hundreds or thousands of years. Language by its very nature changes from time to time, and these changes are random in nature, so two different populations with the same mother language can evolve two separate language dialects. These dialects then become languages in themselves, and so on.

all the languages of the world are thought to have evolved from one single language, or at the very least a very small number of originating languages. however, people travelled and language evolves in the same way that living things do.

There was just one until......
Genesis 11
The Tower of Babel
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, [a] they found a plain in Shinar [b] and settled there.
3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel [c] —because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Because language developed after humans had spread across the world. Therefore, people who were seperated by mountian chains or oceans would not be able to communicate and coordinate their languages.
Remember, China wasn't "discovered" by Europeans for a very long time, the America's took longer. Only recently have culutres become integrated.

There was one language in the beginning and the difference of languages came as people were trying to reach God.

As people moved from place to place words and expressions changed. If you look at languages, in many cases, you will see a common root.. Some moved too far and got isolated or became isolationist societies. This caused their language to evolve in a completely different manner.
