I have six chicks that are about 5 months old and I want to know if any will become a rooster and how can I tell

It really isn't that complicated. I don't know the age, exactly, but males and females LOOK different. Don't poke their butts. A vet should be able to tell you, but if you don't want to pay them, just wait until they get bigger. In most of the common American breeds the wattle (red skin under the neck and on their head) is larger on the males than on the females.

It takes years to learn. The males have a tiny bump on the interior of their anus. If you squeeze their anus, pointing away from you of course, it will open slighlty and expell poo, and you might be able to see. I can't do this, I have just seen a documentary on TV about this.
