How young are you. If you are still a teen then you don't need a credit card. You are just going to get your self into trouble. But by the time you turn 18 everyone is going to be after you for a credit card. You should just through them all away. But if it is necessary, then you should find a credit card that has a low interest rate, and one that has a fixed rate. If it is a variable rate then your interest rate will go up when ever. If it is fixed then you are guranteed that interest rate. Be careful how you use your card, and only buy things that you are going to be able to pay off soon. Believe me, you don't want to be in debit by the time you turn 25. You want to be able to buy a house or a car when you are older. You can't do those things when you are owing all of these credit card companies.

You didn't say how old you were, but if you are a minor, your parent can put you on a credit card as a user, this will help you build credit. If you are not a minor, try a secured credit card that you put a saving account up to get. Look very carefully for these type of companies...you want one that charges a low yearly fee to have the card ($29.00 or less), that does not charge a monthly fee wether you use the card or not. One that pays you interest on the money you put up for collateral, One that with on time payments will release the hold on your saving account after a period of time, and one that charges a reasonable interest rate 14% or less. Good Luck!

You really don't need a credit card. You can do the same thing with a debit card as you can with a credit card without the worry that you will get a statement each month asking for money. Read the book "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. He has some really good info on the subject. Don't fall for the tale that credit card companies try to portray when it comes to having a credit card.

If you are 18 you should have no problem. Credit Card companies go after young people so easily. Capital One is usually quick to get a mailing out to you the day you turn 18.

There are some companies that offer credit cards to people under 18, but they don't work like regular cards, and your guardian has to sign off on it.

I would open a checking account somewhere, and then ask for a CheckCard. I have a Visa CheckCard for my bank, but it looks and acts like a credit card. I don't need to know my bank account info. The card acts for everything. You're supposed to be 18 or older, but like my banker said, it usually goes through the cracks, like for me (heh, heh), and with nothing to lose, he signed me up.

Obviously, this is prepaid as it comes out of your checking account funds. So simply put money in there. And get a part-time job and have the money directly deposited into the account. Many banks offer free student checking and there's no fees for using the card as credit, which is the only way you'd want to pay for things anyway. It really doesn't get better than that. Believe me, you're not missing anything with this versus a credit card. It's this or pay annual fees and interest rates. Go with the free CheckCard instead.

Guess the question is how young is "this young." I got when I was 18 and in college. Citibank is great for students.

I had also had a bank account for a number of years prior to that.
While credit and credit rating are important try not to fall into the pitfalls of credit. There are very few things that you should carry credit on.
ie: house, car. (only car if you NEED one and can't pay straight out.)
Other wise pay them off regularly.
you could also get a secured credit card. That is where you put $500 dollars in and than you use credit against it. Eventually you can switch it over to an none secured card.

You can get-- and don't need-- a credit card until you're 18. Get over it.
