Religious Faith is actually the exact opposite of wishful thinking. Wishful thinking is simply not knowing or believing that anything is possible, just hoping that something is. However, religious Faith is Knowing there is a positive force behind life and what happens. Faith means belief and trust. That is what sets them apart.

Wishful thinking is a baseless hope that has no merit. It can either have a legit chance of becoming reality or be outrageously improbable in coming to fruition.
Faith is the "substance" of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. To place your faith in someone is to know that person, to have confidence in their ability and to show that you believe in them 100%.
Wishes are but a dream, Faith is reality.

Try this - make a list of 10-20 things you'd like to get or have happen. Rank the items on the list as "Got to have", "would really like", and "nice to have", according to how badly you want them. Say a sincere prayer for half of the things in each group, and then say, "Golly, I wish xxxx would happen" for the other half. Keep track of which ones come to pass in the next week or two. Then decide if one is any more likely to cause the things you want to come true.

yes, any kind of faith in anything is partly wishful thinking. faith that people are generally good, faith that your life will get better, faith that the person who are talking to you is telling the truth. but there is nothing wrong with any kind of faith just because it could be partly wishful thinking.

No.

Believing in anything with the same degree of credulity will have the exact same results.

As an example (not to single out, but to illustrate):

Christians could substitute "magic rocks" for "Jesus" and their lives would be no different. And, if they used the same standard they use for Jesus belief, would come to believe in their magic rocks.

Yes. I hoped that Jesus was what I wanted to believe He was. I found out that He is. And my hope became faith. I could not have wished it into existence. The difference is that I know Him. I know Him. He is as close as my breath. He is as real to me as you are.I don't see you but I know you are there because we are having a conversation. God is that real.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Take one small step of faith, by asking Jesus to forgive you, and giving your life to Him - You will soon know.
