The current issue of Consumer Reports tests 21 laptops. Best Buys are...

In the 15.4-inch Budget category, Gateway NX510S $740

In the 15.4-inch Workhorse category, Dell Inspiron E1505 $1120

In the 12.2 to 13.3-inch Slim and Light, Apple Macbook 13.3" $1200

Unfortunately, the article doesn't say whether or not they can burn CD or DVDs. (I doubt that the Budget model can.)

I have a Dell laptop that is very good and I recently purchased my second Dell home computer during their 22nd anniversary sale and have never had a problem of any kind with a Dell computer. And while there are many good computers out there it is hard to beat the price of a Dell as they always have some sort of a special or promotion going on.
