Sit ups and crunches alone aren't good enough if you truly want to work and define your entire abdomen. Your ab region, or "core" consists of 5 different muscle regions. If you were to only do crunches, you would only be working your upper abs, and sit ups only work your upper abs and slightly your lower ones. The core consists of your upper abs, lower abs, obliques, transverse ("deep abdominals"), and your back. I suggest picking up the book from Men's Health magazine, The Abs Diet (www.absdiet.com) which has probably 100 ab workouts and teaches you to work all sections of your core as well as what to eat to maximize your results (i mostly just use the workouts- because they are awsome). They recently came out with a book geared towards women but they have the same excercises. Also, if you're finding you have to do a lot of each excercise which takes up a lot of time, try including weight in with your ab workouts (ie. hold a medicine ball or a dumbell weight on your chest as you do your crunches), which will give you further results after your body gets used to doing them without weights. Also remember, to lose fat over the abs, the only way to get rid of it is by cardio - crunches, etc. will not get rid of the fat - it will only built and tone the muscle underneath the fat.

Add cardio to your routine so that you'll burn off the layer of fat that currently coating your ab muscles. Doing crunches all day won't do any good if your new muscles are covered by a layer of fat!

Are you familiar with gravity boots? If not look them on on Google.
They're hooks that you put on your ankles so you can suspend, upside down, from a bar. Using these for inverted sit ups is great for the mid section.
