When I first got my dog Samson, (he was a 3 yr old(pound puppy)
he was sitting in the pound for 32 days , and that had an impact on his personality psychologically. He did the same thing when I would leave, and just as you suspected I had no idea it was going on. The dog has probably got abandonment issues. And they are real. There is some type of way you can tell what the dog is trying to let you know by the bark, if its repetitious or not.
Nevertheless leave a nice note explaining the situation to the owners , I'm sure they will appreciate you telling them first.
Usually if you just talk sweet to the dog through the door, they will usually calm down.

In a nice way let them know of the problem. Perhaps they don't know. speak to them directly and politely. The next step is up to their response. People can't always like you, so what. If you are polite they have no reason to disrespect you and if they fluff you off, well then you might have to complain to the buildings manager. they can do something about it. Crate train the dog, maybe its anxiety the reason the dogs is barking, that crate will ease it. Just an idea. good Luck!!!

I have had the identical challenge and theirs no longer much you can do in most apartments the floor that separates the upstairs apartments from downstairs could be very thin. (i put a broom through my ceiling to the upstairs seeking to get them to be quiet that is how thin the separation between your models are.) that suggests you are going to hear the whole thing that goes on upstairs, so in the event you don't just like the noise then i endorse you progress to an upstairs condo, then see how many complaints you get with a new born crying always. You jogging rapid on the ground to get your youngster will sound like a herd of elephants walking across the floor to those under you however fairly i advocate you progress to a residence or a one story complex.

I had the same problem a few years ago. I ended up calling the police and they turned it over to animal control who visited the neighbors and told them to keep their dog quiet.
The neighbors never knew who called animal control on them and they started keeping their dog inside, where its barks were very muffled and the problem ended.

Do you know the neighbor? If so, speak to them about it in a nice way. If you don't know them, leave a note on the door, you don't have to sign it...about how the dog is really bothering you. If they don't do anything, talk to your landlord. If you signed any kind of rental agreement or lease, there is a clause in them, usually, that assures you "quiet enjoyment" of your property!

Talk to the owner or manger. Dont be afraid to approach them.
You have just as much right to silence as the rest of us.
Dont be aggresive til you need to be. Polite will usually win, and maybe get you a new friend.
