Lava is the word for magma (melted rock) which comes out onto the surface of the Earth. When lava comes out of the magma chamber and cools, it hardens into rock. The term lava can describe melted rock which flows, and pieces thrown into the air by eruptions.
Lava comes in many different forms, among them are:

'A'a - lava which has a blocky or spiny surface. A'a' is pronounced ah-ah because that is the sound someone will make if they accidentally walk over a still hot flow.
Pahoehoe - Lava with a smooth, or ropy appearance.
Block lava - A solid rock chunk which was thrown from a volcano or lava flow.
Bomb lava - Also known as volcanic bombs; lava chunks thrown from volcanos while partially molten.
Pillow lava - Lava that comes out underwater makes long pillow-shaped rocks.
Lava coming out the the volcano's mouth can flow at different speeds. It usually moves slower than a walking rate. Lava in tight channels can sometimes flow as fast or faster than an Olympic sprinter can run.

Lava is molten rock expelled by a volcano during an eruption. Magma is molten rock below the earth's surface. Lava, when first exuded from a volcanic vent, is a liquid at temperatures from 700 °C to 1,200 °C (1,300 °F to 2,200 °F). Although lava is quite viscous, about 100,000 times the viscosity of water, it can flow great distances before cooling and solidifying.

Lava is molten rock that is out of the ground, on the surface of the earth from a volcano. Magma is the same thing, but it's inside the volcano. That's what I was taught anyway! Good luck!

lava is molten, or melted rock from the earth's core. Lava is what it is when it comes out of the Earth. If still underground it is called magma.

Molten Rock that spews forth from cavities in the Earth affected by the friction of moving Plates and crust which the friction gives you Melted rock and cannot remain in the earth so it is spewed out like puss from a Zit. Sorry if that example grossed you out it's just a good Ilustration I learned from my Geology teacher.
