I want to know how to act very confident - like the world is wrapped around my fingers... kind to others, but very in touch w/ myself. I want a good self esteem, a good body image. I want to act refined, be refined, be elegant, well mannered - a woman that will stand out in a crowd. A girl that a smart guy would gravitate towards. Please give me practical tips, on being this woman.

btw, I am 18, and headed off to college. Most of my life, I have not been around guys enough, to be comfortable conversing w/ them ( as in I just met you, the cat has got my tongue, so I act weird). I am attracted to quiter guys, being I am an extrovert. However, somehow my strong points, and my "extrovertness" is missed, because I act so self conscious around guys. I think myself hot, yet around guys I lose all confidence, and I feel utterly stupid. I start dreaming of a guy that would notice me in spite of my stupidness. That doesn't seem to happen. I want to have a good year in college... be one of the cool, hot girls. How?!!! Help!

Try not to worry about looking like the world is wrapped around your fingers. Show consideration and respect to others, expect it in return, develop relationships with people who act the same. About elegance...go for comfortable, classic clothes, not fussy or trendy things. Have a consult with a good hairdresser and get a haircut that will be flattering and easy to maintain. If you have any skin problems, go to a dermatologist and get them handled. You will feel more at ease if your hair and skin are absolutely off your worry list.

Self-consciously sexy, high-maintenance clothes, silly shoes like mules and stiletto heels, long real or fake fingernails, and too much makeup all convey insecurity and lack of class, and they attract guys who also lack class. I used to run a girls' dorm, and the really high-maintenance girls who tried to look like Victoria's Secret models had the worst luck. They did not look like Victoria's Secret models, in the first place, but like needy, insecure little sluts, and they attracted the worst Neanderthals as boyfriends.

It is perfectly normal to become toungue twisted when trying to impress someone of the opposite sex. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet guys at school and one can always talk about classes one might share or find common interests.

Don't try too hard to be some one other than yourself, but do always remember your manners.

Remember your "Ps & Q's"
Don't talk with food in your mouth
No elbows on the table
Ladies keep their knees together.
White shoes are ok after Labor Day (at least that's what they say on What not to Wear)
Keep makeup to a minimum
Keep your body and mind clean and pure (this is an old one)

Stay away from trends and stick to the classics. I also wear boots with a heel that go up to my calf/below my knee. I stick to classic jewelry like gold hoops, pearl earrings, diamond studs. I walk with my back straight. I never use profanity or gossip. I wish I had more time to talk to you. I swoop my hair up in a classic twist and wear soft make-up that focusing on my strongest point which are my green eyes. Do not wear rings on every finger. Very tacky. Remember, classic jewelry. A string of pearls is always lovely and elegant. Sometimes I put my hair in a loose bun and then tie a black/white scarf around the bun with the bow UNDER the bun. It gives it a different look. And above all, don't pretend to be something different that who you are. If you like pasta, eat pasta. If you enjoy comedies, watch comedies. If you like hiking, then hike. Be true to yourself.

Find a role model that acts like you want to.

Then start acting like that. Pretend till it's real, basically. A lot of self-confidence is projection. If you -think- you are self confident, you will be.

IF you want to be elegant, refined, well-mannered, then start by acting that way....change habits that don't portray you that way, slowly, because you have to develop new habits.

Do NOT slurp your tea or coffee.
Do NOT sit with your legs spread apart.
Do NOT chew with your mouth open and take only small bites.
And most importantly, talk and laugh like a lady. Ta Ta...
