Yes I think they were going to resell them. In fact I have little or no doubt they were going to resell them. The market in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq for those things is phenomenal and they'd have made a fortune.
Sadly they would have been used to set off IED's and similar devices. I think whoever turned them in saved a lot of lives.

Coragryphs answer is the best, IMHO. This is the reason the Founding Fathers put in the Constitution that a person is innocent until proven guilty, no matter how it may APPEAR. The burden of proof is on the prosecutor to prove them guilty. If we leave it to the average person or people, we would revert back to vigilantism, and innocent people would once again be dying because of how it APPEARED.
Sprouts Mom, cell phones ARE traceable once activated. It is not necessary to revert to telegrams and carrier pigeons because of the misuse of this device by terrorists.
How about we let the authorities take care of this one since they know more about it than we do? If there is a case brought against them, then the jury can decide guilt or innocence once they know the FACTS of the case.

Thank you coragryph, you said exactly what I wanted to say.
You people don't even know what exactly happened. These guys have been interrogated before and were let go. So whenever someone who doesn't look quite white, tries to make money by buying/selling/trading stuff are they going to be prosecuted for "aiding" terrorism?
This is a case of racial profiling. This is a case of stupid ******** American paranoia. This is a case of close minded bigotry. This world is a dangerous place for dumb people like you. The sooner you leave the planet the better for the rest of us.

If someone does - they have a serious problem. If ANYONE thinks terrorism still isn't alive and well in this country - just take a look at these guys. Let's drive a thousand miles to buy hundreds of untraceable cel phones - to sell them for the same price you can buy one at at your corner store?
I believe these cel phone companies should be MADE to put something in these 'phones to MAKE them traceable.
My friend's son is in Bethesda Naval Hospital after being blown up by an IED triggered by one of these lovely little things. I think they should be outlawed, banned, you name it. If the cel 'phone companies won't do it and spend the extra nickel (which they then pass along to you for $3.00) they should be outlawed completely.
How many Marines have to be permanently disabled, or killed? How many planes have to crash into the sea before they give up that lousy nickel?

It's highly unusual to walk into a Walmart and put 1,000 of anything into your cart, especially something as expensive as a cell phone. Hats of to the store employees/manager who did something about it. They could have been used as detonators for weapons.
And, if they were truely going to resell them, they'd have special documentation/licenses so they wouldn't have to pay the sales tax. No way does a good businessman pay the tax himself, especially on 1,000 phones!!

I am not sure, I would presume them innocent until proved guilty. If found guilty then they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and yes the person from walmart did their job and should be commended.

I would say that purchasing 1000 cell phones is probable cause for further investigation. Who would buy them from these guys if they could just go to Walmart and get them cheaper?

"makes no sense".
Yeah and when the terrorists tried to get a refund on the rental truck after the 1st WTC attack, made a lot of sense?
No one has accused these people as being geniuses.

And one more nail in the constitutional coffin.
Don't you think you should wait until the actual trial before determining people are guilty just based on their ethnicity or religion?
I'm not saying that the store didn't do good by reporting suspicious activity (by anyone regardless of who they were). Or that they should be charged with whatever crimes they might have committed.
But has everyone forgotten that 50 or 70 years ago, blacks were presumed guilty until proven innocent? Are we now assuming that anyone with an arabic name is automatically guilty? Have we learned nothing in the past half century?
