I have a 3 month old shih-tsu, who is so cute, but i CAN"T potty train her.
I have tried limiting her water, and feed only at night, i have tried taking her out every 2 hours, then every hour, then every half hour.
I bought some of that stuff, that you spray in a spot, and it is supposed to tell them where to go.
Every time we take her out, we come in and she "goes" on my rug, or in a corner.
Someone please help me.... PLEASE.... I don't want to have to get rid of her.... but we are renting, and she is going to ruin the carpet. And she is driving me insaine.
OH I AM treating the accident spots with the special solution to remove the smell
I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!
Please serious answers only......

A puppy of that age will need to poop about 20-40 minutes after she eats..Take her for a walk (walking stimulates the bowels to move) for 30 minutes, or until she does go..take her to a secluded area, as she is showing insecurity by doing it only in the house...You see, she thinks that if she does it outside, then the 'boogyman' can find a poor defenseless puppy by her scent...But, if she does it inside, her scent is covered by your scent, and she feels safe..
She needs to walk where it is quiet, and no other dogs or dog smells are around..Take a bit of her poo in a plastic bag, and put it down in a secluded corner where you want her to go..then, after she has walked a bit, take her back to that spot and stand around, allowing her to sniff...she is likely to go in a few minutes..this is not the time to praise, as she doesn't want it noticed...but, cheerfully take her back indoors..
dogs need 14 repetitions to learn a tack, so be patient, and after about 14 times, she will be dependable to 'go' out side.
Feed her on a routine, and 3 times per day at her age..pick up her food after 15-20 minutes.
Please don't scold her for doing it indoors, or you will only traumatize the act of elimination all the more..and it will take longer to get her doing it out of doors.

Most animals who are having this type of behavior are either attempting to mark over (claim the space for themselves) old stains and smells. Even if you use special cleaners, a lot of times the smells will be into the rug, through the padding and into the flooring itself. The dog will be able to pick up smells that you cannot notice. I would take her to the vet, many dogs and cats who are difficult to train are actually having a medical problem such as an infection; and are actually trying to tell you this by going to the bathroom in the house. Please make a vet appointment and have her checked out, and he/she can probably help you. Do not give up, sometimes human babies are difficult to train also; and we have to just keep working on it. Stay calm, if you are acting upset, the puppy can actually pick up on that, and may be nervous because of it; and is having a more difficult time. Hang in there, take her to the vet, and just breathe. She is just a baby after all. You can rent a carpet steamer to help restore the carpet. I have pets too, one dog and 4 cats, and no matter how well trained they are there are sometimes accidents. I have just learned that I do not own any material item that is worth more to me than my kids and animals. Good luck to you and your fur baby!

You know i am the dogg master of the household world wit 4 dogs.....looooooool.
It's gonna take a lil while since its a puppy but start putting out that newspaper on the spot where you want the pup to poop and pee at, and when or if the pup does poop on the floor just lightly spank that booty a couple times (i prefer a small roll of newspaper to spank with because they hate that pop sound from the paper) and also say "no, bad dog"(so it knows good from bad) and put that poop onto the paper so she knows where she is to go at(because for all it knows, the newspaper is merely a piece of furniture or loud krinkly stuff on the floor)... and when it finally does go in the right place(give it a treat so it knows it has done well by going poo poo on the paper)
It may miss its aim a few times but if it even gets closer to the paper from where it was originally going at then it has done well and will eventually land on the target spot.
And, eventually it will start barking and scratching at the door and doing tail spins when it wants to go out(and it will be up to you to recognize that it is telling you it wants to go out, it may even be giving you signs now but you don't recognize it and you thinks it just wants to play or cuddle). So be prepared for those midnight wake up calls(thats why its very good to teach it the paper poddy trick)

Get rid of the spray stuff. You might want to consider buying an indoor kennel as most dogs won't soil their sleeping area. She should like her kennel in the long run. Everytime she goes on your rug, etc., put her in the kennel after showing her the spot and telling her Bad Dog. You also might want to get puppy pads instead and then gradually move the used pads outside (nail them to the ground if you have to). Your dog might need longer walks to get her used to the idea. If she uses a particular spot outside keep taking her to that spot, or to the used puppy pad. Females are more particular, so you will have to be firm with her. Good Luck!

I thought I was going to either have to kill my puppy dog, or give him away for his own protection. The solution was one of those kennel cages they sell in Walmart. Best money I ever spent. I set him up in it, with a blanket, not water or food, except a favored chew for those itchy puppy teeth (pig ears). I'd let him out when I was there to supervise directly, feed, and water, or go outside. And when it was time to go in, I'd just say "get in bed", and he went right in after a couple days. And always reward with a treat when you put them in. The nice thing is, if you go on a trip, the dog's bed goes along, they like it. The cage does fold down flat for trips. Be sure to get one that'll still fit when your pup becomes fully grown. Mine goes in whenever he's ready for bed without being told. It's his space, and he never does any "doggy business" in it. Good luck. It worked for my pug, and he was as hardheaded as they come.

If that is the only other things he has had to eat besides puppy food he might get excited b/c they taste different. You shouldnt give puppies dog treats until they are like one year but hard bones and stuff like that are ok because puppies can chew them and they arent bad for their teeth. that way they arent chewing on your Personal objects. The bones also clean their teeth and scrape the tarter off their teeth. If you have any other concerns call the vet they prolly can help you.

when she goes on the rug, put her nose by it where she can smell it, smack her, tell her no, or bad, and take her right back outside. I tried everything for mine too, and it was SO annoying, but this was what worked best for me.
Also, get a little kennel and put her in there when you are gone, or overnight if you like, but if you do it overnight, take her out to potty as SOON as you get up. Odds are, she'll learn not to potty where she has to sleep or spend time in there.
MOST IMPORTANT: When she does potty outside, REWARD her. Pet her and praise her, maybe even give her a treat. They learn from that real quick.
If you end up having to get rid of her, please e mail me. But hopefully you can train her and keep her forever. Good luck to you. It's a long process, but so rewarding when they finally catch on.

Real quick answer here
Reward/ her with a treat everytime she pee's outside!! don't forget to praise her verbally...use a high enthusiastic tone, like it's the most absolutely wonderful thing she's ever done.......trust me it works....do not physically punish your dog, but use a firm (not angry) tone to tell her you are very unhappy and tell her NO TREAT...your puppy will very quickly realise that Peepee outside = treat...have you considered Crate Training your dog? this is especially good if your Apartment raising a dog!!...there are really good reference material out there...Google Dr. Stanley Coren, he is amazing at understanding Dogs and thier owners...Good Luck

Give her food and water, then take her out and don't bring her back until she does her business. When she does it, praise her and let her know that's what you want. At three months she has to go out often. I would suggest a dog crate not the kind for travel and keep her in the crate unless you are sitting or playing with her.

My dog seemed to take forever to potty train then just figured it out suddenly.
The main thing is to try and get them to associate to ask to go outside when they have to go. When he did go inside he got a stern no and put outside immediately. (only if we caught him in the act - if you don't get them right then it doesn't have any effect) If you get a chance to mop it up with a paper towel take that out and put it in the spot where you want them. If they go when you have them outside praise them immensely. Also we started saying "go potty" when we did walk - actually to the point that if we said it before we got him out he would go (that's what we wanted him to do after all) Try and see if there are any signs they she is going to go - sniffing and area is a good one - and as soon as she starts doing that take her out immediately.
It takes a while but eventually they start catching on. Age has a bit to do with it too - as they get older they will be more in to learning.
