I am happy for so many good answers.
The issue is, who comes first -ones's family or or our Lord.
The answer that Jesus gives might sound absurd if you do not understand His message. And it inidacates that the family fo the man was not apparently believers.
Jesus was telling the man that his spiritually dead, non-believeing family should take care of the burial service.
Jessus called him to be His disciple and follow Him. Christian discipleship calls for high commitment.
If you are more worried about your spiritually dead family than Lord's calling, you are not ready to serve Him. He did not promise the easy way.

OOPs..sorry for tyoes..I quickly added some more detail...so Christians do not make them look so ignorant with their answers...no wonder non-believers have some issues with them...thank you for all answers though...

LOL-
a mans father had died and Jesus wanted him to come with him and the man wanted to first bury his father out of respect.
Jesus said let the dead bury the dead!
The meaning is that the living is more important than the shell of a person there not there anymore. When there is work to be done go do the work you can do nothing for the dead, there is something you can do for the living.

He was talking about the spiritually dead burying the physically dead! If you remember the story, the man gave Jesus an excuse as to why he could not follow Him at that moment! That is why Jesus said what He did!
Reread this passage from the Gospels and you will see what Jesus meant!

Nothing Jesus did was absurd. If you ask me... which you didn't but I will tell you anyway...the only absurd thing I think Jesus did was not talk God the Father out of creating humans.

He reminds us about a great reality that man is soul, not body.
His statement means: let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead.

Jesus gave a lot of good advice, but he was misinturpreted and misunderstood. I don't think it was absurd at all, I think it was just misread, like everything else he said.

As are all of Jesus' teachings, his sayings are meant to be understood on different levels. While you are taking this phrase literally, he was speaking figuratively, so no, it was not absurd.

As I understand it he was talking about "spiritually" dead. In other words let the spiritually dead dwell on the dead and death.

Do you see the light? Apparently not. Nothing Jesus says or does is absurd. We may not always understand it but that doesn't mean it is absurd.

Absurd, morally reprehensible, and ridiculous, like about 65% of the things that Jesus said.
