Yes, it is proper to bring a gift. However, if finances are an issue, it is certainly appropriate to purchase 2 small presents (one for the engagement and one for the wedding) so that you end up spending the same as you would if you just bought a wedding present.

Absolutely yes. It doesn't have to be much, but you definitely need to recognize the engagement.
A fun gift suggestion for a couple is a big popcorn bowl, box of microwave popcorn, candy, sodas or beer, and movie rental gift card. It's fun, and is something that will always be used.
