and/or educated guess. My son is boarding at LAX today. I want to know the origin of the idea of using liquids in bomb making. Specifically, which liquids are used for bombmaking? What kind of bombs are made from liquids? Where was a liquid containing bomb ever used?

Or is the government making us worry needlessly? What's going on?

The alleged plan by the terrorists was to smuggle explosive material on board - part in liquid form and part in gel form so that it wouldn't be detectable - and then combine the 2 parts once the plane was in mid-air. The report I heard on NBC last night said that the government is working towards being able to detect liquid-form explosives so that they no longer have to inconvenience all us innocent travellers.

Just as a side note, many years ago (before 9-11-01), I was going through security at an airport with a water bottle in my hand. Since I couldn't put it through the machine, they made me drink a little of it while they watched closely to prove that it really was just water.

Being a chemist with a Masters Degree in Chemical Science I can simply tell you there are a number of Liquids that when mixed can become Very Explosive just in the mixing to the point of Exploding when shaken. Nitro-glyceryn being the first to come to mind.

Regarding Your questions:
"Specifically, which liquids are used for bombmaking?
What kind of bombs are made from liquids?"

You Don't have any need to Know these answers!!! Least of all to be answered here...

No I don't think your government is making you worry Needlessly,, Nor will you when Planes fall from the Sky,, or Trains Go Boom like they did in Spain.

In the First and Second World Wars a Great Many Sabotage Bombs were made by combining Liquid ingredents of Acids and Oxidizers.
So 'NUF Said on that.

Smell the Roses while you still can and Take a chemistry class or 2..... Above all,, Stay out of the way of falling Planes!

just think gasoline in a bottle when ignited boom.... I will not list any other chemical combinations for obvious reasons but there are plenty of volatile liquid chemicals which can explode. A liquid bomb was used on a plane over the Pacific before. It would take about 30 seconds to whip up a bomb out of chemicals that could easily tear a huge hole in a plane.

I'm not sure why people are complaining about this so much, after you go through security just buy drinks in duty free. The idea is you can't bring any liquids through security you can still buy the duty free drinks.

hi, no, this time its not a pointless difficulty. A plot replaced into uncovered it sluggish in the past interior the some distance East wherein human beings have been making plans to hold nitroglycerin on board flights, and with the aid of combining it with another common established stuff, have been able to arising very useful explosive gadgets. specific chemical compounds in lliquid style can look rather probability unfastened, and if 2 or extra human beings carry distinctive chemical compounds that could react together to make an explosion, then we've a subject! See the information interior the positioning that I somewhat have stated as source. From what I hear, the only beverages allowed are drugs- with a physician's prescription- and toddler formulation/milk- provided the grownup can style it interior the presence of protection officers to instruct that that's non-poisonous. desire this facilitates...

Watch and listen to the news. Al Qaeda tried something similar about 11 years ago and were thwarted. The British, the US, and the Pakistan governments uncovered this latest plot. I do not think it would be wise to let the whole world know what two household chemicals could be mixed together to create an explosion.
The plot called for the bombers to dye one liquid and put it in the bottom of a British sports drink. The top would have actual sports drink in the same color, top to bottom. They were going to use electricity generated in one use cameras to detonate these two chemicals, after they were smuggled onto planes and after they mixed them together in flight.
Governments all over the world are aware of this plot and all are doing everything they can to prevent unknown plotters from carrying out their terror. If terrorists planned to disguise the liquids, governments are eliminating all liquids from carry on baggage, to be safe. Liquids can be put in checked baggage. Terrorists cannot get to those bags, in the air, to mix their witches' brew.
Your questions make you sound like a New York Times editor. If the US government does something, lets figure out what is wrong with it.

The reason is that bombs can be a fluid bomb made from flammable substances, and metal detectors and x rays cannot differentiate between harmful fluids and non harmful fluids, there is no detector that can do this as yet. So it is safer to not take any fluids aboard the plane, the only exception at the moment is babys milk, which the carer has to drink in front of security. Liquid bombs have been used often and cannot be screened. So be thankful that we have safety measures in place and our security is one step ahead of terrorists

did you freaking watch the news yesturday? they're making sure it wont happen again so there banning it the government is trying to help save our asses not screw us over do you know the death toll estimate if the bombs exploded? they said around 3000 deaths over the atlantic that is what most people like to call mass murder you can't possibly think the government is doing this for fun

Terrorists involved in the suspected plot could have been planning to combine explosive ingredients disguised as common, everyday items such as mineral water, fizzy drinks and sugar.

There are a lot of homemade mixtures you can concoct from some very common materials that are innocent in themselves.

We are talking about common, everyday chemicals that are used in perfumes, cosmetics, drain cleaner, batteries, or could for example be stolen from school labs.

These materials are easy to obtain and hard to detect, and could be smuggled in small amounts in small containers because it doesn't take much to blow an aircraft up.

Nitro glycerin is the original high explosive, the bombs used in the Oklohoma City bombing was a mixture of diesel and liquid cow manure, there are dozens of other mixtures for liquid explosives, many of which can be made in the average persons kitchen

I went to a huge wedding of a famous television icon a few years ago, and believe it or not they made us do the same thing. Security told us that liquids could be used to store explosives.

I wouldn't say the Gov't is making us worry needlessly. They have to do what they have to do. It's better being safe than sorry.

Because there were men going to blow up planes in flight with liquid bombs (they had the liquid in water bottles and stuff.) They were boarding planes in the UK heading for the US. So now you can't even have a tube of lip gloss or anything, it sucks!
