Advantage and Revolution are the better ones to use. Flea collars do not work well, and can actually be harmful, but mostly they are pointless. Advantage and Revolution kill the adult fleas, their eggs, and also kill many common types of worms and mites as well, so they are your money's best value.
NEVER use products bought from Wal-Mart etc cause they can cause very severe reactions inducing seizures and death (I work in a vet hospital and have seen it many times. The owner wanted to save a couple bucks and their cat or dog ended up sezuring and costing them hundreds!).
There's no reason to be 'freaked out' about it, they are VERY safe, in fact they tested them on rats and found that they could soak the ENTIRE rat in it and it still wouldn't be harmed. If your pet does lick it, they do get a bit drooly at the mouth, but there is no harm done by it at all.

Advantage is the best product out there and not only does it kill the fleas on your pet, but anywhere it goes in the home. It even kills the fleas in the carpet! It is applied directly behind the head in between the ears where they cannot lick it off and will work in 3 days or less! Just follow the directions.

Aside from shaving your cat.... Advantage is technically the safest. If your pet has a reaction- just wash it off. Flea collars are worthless and can seriously hurt your cat. They only repel fleas around the collar and the pesticides used in them can irritate the skin. For people that say use garlic, olive oil, etc.... I wouldn't. Garlic stinks and is from the onion family- WHICH IS TOXIC to cats and dogs. The olive oil- well, go ahead if you want an oily cat with loose stools.

I've had pets for many years and the best thing I've used is Frontline Plus. Similar to Advantage & applied the same way.
Prior to that, I used Zodiac fleas collars with a growth inhibitor. Lasts 8 months. But the Frontline & Advantage are much more effective.

Do not use Hartz flea products they are not safe. The safest way to get fleas off a cat is to use a flea comb. Just dip the comb in a bowel of soapy water when you get a flea. That should drowned the little bug as soap breaks the tension of the water.

i replaced into raising a 2wk old kitten who had one billion fleas... ugh! The vet mentioned the only ingredient i ought to apply at that youthful age is daybreak dish cleansing soap .. liquid obv... which i used and it worked SO nicely. All fleas have been long previous after one somewhat solid bathtub :) additionally, appears like its an outdoors cat meaning, its getting the fleas returned and returned from something outdoors. id distinctly propose no longer letting it out, or it somewhat is going to consistently have fleas. basically nature

I've heard that giving them brewer's yeast or garlic makes their blood taste bad to the fleas and repels them. I've tried with a little bit of success, but it's a constant battle to control them because they get in your home too. Another answerer told me that salt helps. (Sprinkled on the carpet, and maybe to rub it into the cat's coat.) That makes sense; I guess it dehydrates the fleas. I'm like you, I don't like the idea of using pesticides either, but if the problem got to be too bad, I've heard Frontline is the best and the safest.

Advantage works. That's what I use. but recently I was given some free samples of flea treats, which are treats you can give to your cat or dog and it naturally repels pests like fleas.

I use Revolution. It is both heartworm and flea control. Haven't seen a flea since I started using it three years ago, and it is the only heartworm preventative for cats.

I use Revolution which is what you aren't wanting, but it works well and my vet told me it is the lowest strength flea treatment of that kind. He said they don't come any milder.
