I think it's all about what works for you.Personally,I use both.In the summer I go outside and use the natural sounds of nature. In the winter I use CD's with soothing music or nature sounds.I find both work for me.

Hi,
I am an Indian ,very close to the meditaion Gurus, and I am told a different version of meditation.
Meditation is something which occurs to you through a medium called BAKTHI. Meditation can't be done on our own will power, but rather it occurs to us.
Now If you want to meditate first you have to learn what BAKTHI is all about ( www.iskcon.com ).Once you know about BAKTHI ,you won't need meditation after that, bcoz its such an joyful activity itself.
According to HINDU dharma meditation needs lots of preconditions, which are impossible to follow these days.Without satisfying them you can't reach the real goal of meditation (self realization) but you can only feel the breathing well organised.
You need not be an HINDU to follow BAKTHI.We had lots of GURU's from other religions in the past.

It is a matter of preference HOWEVER it could & should be argued that Meditation is 'a purely natural state,' in other words it is YOU and The Universe so you should not need Outside stimuli or aids of any sort. One should be able to Meditate in the middle of a Bagdad Cafe at high noon when the Sunis & Sheites are lobbing bullets & bombs at each other. YOU CREATE the Silence by blocking out all thought but inner thought. Peace.

It is more of a personal preferance. With complete silence, it is sometimes harder, as you may find your self distracted more easily. Many people will chant mantras, or focus on a single sound - such as a chime that is rung every so oft. waves or rain would also work. Me, I do it either way. I have gotten to a point that I can do it when it is busy around me, or in complete silence, or when there is a focusing sound.

Meditation is the action of bringing ones mind soley to bear on one cognitive thought at a time.
It requires single mindedness and concentration.
If you think that the sound of crashing waves, the pitter-patter of rain, or wailing dolphins will help you to achieve this, then go ahead.
The masters of meditation could probably keep focused during a nuclear war, but if you are just starting, I would suggest quiet.

probably some soft sound is good because perfect silence is hard to find if you have neighbors, live on a street with cars, etc....because the unexpected noise might distract you. i like soft, quiet music, because eventually it gets totally tuned out into silence by the meditation.

It really depends on personal preference. Everyone meditates differently. Experiment and find out which way works best for you.

Meditation is simply deep thought. Sound or no sound depends on what you want to think about. It's good to have sound if you're really listening to it and meditating on it. Do what works best for you.

I live in the city, I have to deal with a little noise. It doesn't really bother me when I meditate.

Personal preference! Try both, whatever works for you. Silence works best for me, but it's not necessary.
