There are two visual indicators. One for speed and one for glideslope. The speed indicator is on the aircraft and the glideslope indicator is on the ship.

The lower red chevron means you're too fast and the upper green chevron means you're too slow.

Technically, it indicates your Angle of Attack being too high or low.

the visual reference is for high or low not slow or fast.
it is called "the ball"
