My cat is about 5 years old. she is black, and very playful, but is an indoor cat.

since late 2005, she has had excessive shedding. we have taken her to the vet and asked about the issue, but our vet said nothing was wrong.

but, she has now developed a small bald spot since 3 weeks ago, that is the size of a dime. we looked up this problem on the computer, and i have leveled it down to two possibilites- parasites, or a hormonal imbalance.

has this ever happened to anyone's cat?

hypothyriod can cause hairloss and is easily treated. If not treated it could be fatal. Take her the vet or a new vet if he does not want to check this out.

Excessive shedding can be an indication of a food allergy, or simply that the food is not a proper diet for a cat.

Try some high end cat foods, especially those with only one protein source. CA Natural is just chicken and rice. Natural Balance has a venison and pea.

Make food switches VERY slowly starting with just a little of the new mixed with the old. Over a period of about three weeks keep increasing the proportion of new food and decreasing the amount of the old food. In about three weeks you will have the cat happily on the new food "straight".

It might be a flea allergy. Make sure you have fleas under control. Also make sure its not due to poor nutrition. Feed the cat good quality cat food, not that cheap stuff. It could also be due to nerves.
