YES dogs have excellent and precise hearing. For instance, any phrase that includes "go for a . . . . " gets my dog excited. Just that phrase and his ears perk up he knows he is either going for a walk, going for a ride, going for a swim. I can also say 'treat' in the middle of a sentence and he picks that up too. Dogs hang on your every word and understand most everything especially if you are teaching them or if you talk to them like they are your counterpart.

No. Humans are capable of having language, with a finite set of word and an infinite way to communicate them. Animals have a limited set of calls and signals, like barking. Dogs can not do much more than than bark, even if they understood what you set. Mainly, dogs and other animals have to be trained to intepret human language through systematic human conditioning.

They probably hear: blah blah blah Spot blah blah. I'm sure they learn some words like sit and come and lie down. But most of the words would be like you speaking with someone using a foreign language that you didn't understand.

I'm not sure, but my dog and my sister's dog seems to. Half the time my dog would just pretend not to just to ignore us or just to make us look stupid. My dog is a crafty one. :) Very smart.

No...
They learn simple one- or two-word commands & what is expected of them when those words are said. Most dogs are eager to please & quickly learn to perform the "tricks" that bring them praise...ie. sit, heel, down, come, etc.
