Sabbath means "a day of rest". It originates from the Seventh Day of Creation: "By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating He had done."

That is why Jews celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday (actually starting at sundown on Friday Night.)

Christians Celebrate the Sabbath on Sunday because that is the day of the Resurrection of Jesus.

In a Hebrew context, the word Sabbath had two meanings. The most prominent would the the seventh day of the week. It was, and still is the day of rest depicted in the Bible; Sabbath literally means rest. The second meaning is for special Sabbaths (sometimes refered to Sabbath days) that were instituted for the Israelites only; these were feast days and the like and were quite similar to the special holidays the Catholic Church has today.

Sabbath means day of rest.

The Jewish Sabbath does not fall on any fixed day of the week. The Jews go by a lunar calendar, while the Romans (Westerners) go by a solar calendar. So the Jewish Sabbath moves around (some months it is on a Tuesday, some months it is on a Friday, etc.). Since most Jews normally live in a Western country that goes by the Gregorian calendar, then they assume that the Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday night (our calendar) and ends at sundown Saturday, for convenience (so that Sabbath observance does not interfere with work).

Christians hold that Sunday is the Sabbath. There is no such law in the Bible. It is a law of the Holy Catholic Church alone. The Bible says `Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.' The Catholic Church says, No. By my divine power I abolish the sabbath day and command you to keep holy the first day of the week. And lo! The entire civilized world bows down in reverent obedience to the command of the Holy Catholic Church.

Sabbath= rest It is a day of rest to come apart from the world and learn more about God and for God to come close to you on His special day. It is said by some to be a Jewish day but where were the Jews in the Creation week? There were only two people, Adam and Eve. Were they Jewish? If you take about any language on Earth, you find the word for Saturday, the true day of rest as begun by God Himself, is a derivative of rest which the word really means. A day of rest. It was the Catholic Church that changed it from the day God instituted to Sunday, the venerable day of the sun to get more of the pagans into the church. In their writings they boast of the fact that they are the ones that changed it and if it did not have that power, why does most of the protestant churches all follow its teaching when they claim to go by the bible and the bible only. It is all in their writings and if you want more on it, let me know and I will be glad to give it to you.

Hi. Sabbath means God's original day of rest. It existed b4 there were Jews (who happened to keep The Sabbath...not invent it). There r some Christian denominations that also keep God's unchanged Sabbath as well.

Jesus, Himself, came 2 fulfill the law; not change it; so, people have a lot of arrogant nerve changing what God put into place..

Happy Sabbath.

Sabbath comes from the Jewish word "shabbat". It is the seventh day of the week (Saturday) (actually observed from 6:00 p.m. Friday night to 6:00 p.m. Saturday night) and is observed as a religious day of rest.

It comes from the Genesis account--God created the world in six days and on the seventh day he rested. He made this an ordinance for Israel. No work was to be done on that day.

God rested from the work of the Creation on the seventh Day and the Shabbat serves as a reminder of this. It also serves to rest people for their work of the other six days.

The sabbath day is saturday, it is a day of rest because that was when God rested after He got finished with creation. Basically you are not to do any work on the sabbath day.

The concept of a Sabbath Day comes from the very beginning of mankind when God prepared this earth for our mortal dwelling place. He worked six time periods to create the earth and make it ready for His children. On the seventh time period, He rested and declared that the seventh day should be a sacred time to remember Him and all that He has done for us. In the Mosaic Law, the fourth commandment memorialized that decree, declaring the Sabbath Day to be Holy. We should do our work on the other six days, as did God, and rest from our labors on the Sabbath in order to devote that day to worship and remembrance and doing good service to our fellow beings, in other words, to do His work on His day.
That concept is still in effect today. Our calendar uses Sunday as the Sabbath Day in spite of the fact that it looks like the first day of the week, it is still one day in seven and doesn't really matter where you place the starting point or the ending point of the week. Thus, we work from Monday to Saturday and rest on Sunday, the Sabbath for Christians. The Jewish people still work from Sunday to Friday, Saturday being the Sabbath. Actually, their cultural clock goes from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday as the Sabbath. That is okay, it is one day in seven to commemorate God's part in what we have here on earth and renew our promises and covenants with Him to follow Him and obey Him and serve one another to help one another to return to Him when our time here is finished.
