I know that aspartame (artificial sweetener in diet sodas, sugar-free things) is bad for you. I have talked to nutritionalists who say that anything diet or sugar-free with aspartame in it is worse for you than the regular soda, other drink, or food. But what exact health effects does it have, and why do they keep using aspartame if it is so bad? Is it just like cigarettes, foods with preservatices, etc? They care more about selling their product than the effects it has on us?

Aspartame causes memory loss and brain tumors ...

Aspartame has been the subject of a vigorous public controversy regarding its safety and the circumstances around its approval. A few studies have also recommended further investigation into alleged connections between aspartame and diseases such as brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma. These findings, combined with notable conflicts of interest in the approval process, have engendered vocal activism regarding the possible risks of aspartame.

ever since the whole low-carb diet craze started, I have been addicted to diet sodas. I drink quite a bit of them every day, and have been doing so for 5 years or so. If there were any ill effects of aspartame, I should be feeling them by now, right? I smoke too.. and I feel the effects of that.

Oh, PLEASE!!
There is nothing to these "reports" of toxicity and "brain tumors".
Just a lot of internet bullsh!t and urban legends.
