to just throw their cig. butt where ever they might happen to be. Is there anyone besides me who thinks this is a disgusting habit besides being a deadly one? Is the world their ash tray, and they shall not want.

I agree with you!! I live near the beach, and most smokers just stick their butts into the sand and leave them there. I know that when I smoked many years ago, I always brought a container with me, and when I left the beach, I took my trash AND butts with me. I wish people would not litter and would be more considerate of others regarding their trash.

Cheers!!

it seems that some people didn't know what the question was. basically the question is asking how fair it is that smokers generally throw their cigarette butts wherever they want.

i smoked for 7 years up til may of '05. the first five or six years, i never even _thought_ about it when i threw a cigarette butt out the window, or on the sidewalk. it never crossed my mind that it was pollution. i don't think i can stress enough the fact that i never once thought about it. out of my hand, out of my mind.

then i saw a show on discovery channel (what a great channel it USED to be) where they showed an island that was half covered in cigarette butts, lighters, pens, and other things that are constantly just dropped on the ground.

half covered.

after that, i started rubbing the ash end of my smoke on the ground and spitting on it while rubbing, before tossing in a trashcan. still bad, but the filter was tossed in a proper receptacle.

It is absolutely disgusting..I recently read somewhere that cigarette filters are now our number 1 form of pollution.....not only are they made of various acetates which take forever to break down..the chemicals they contain (from the cigarettes) do much damage to wildlife...and even birds and fish are found to have swallowed these filters..and then may or may not absorb the toxins....Nicotine is the really addictive part of the drug..but it is also used as a pesticide...but there are far too many dangerous chemicals involved to mention---- I live in a condo in a large building in the city center...considered a nice area..but last week I volunteered to hose down the sidewalks...I was amazed by the Thousands(and I mean thousands) of cigarette butts everywhere...people drop them wherever they want..they tried to bury them in our flower beds.....It was disgusting. I used to be a smoker and I don't believe I was ever so cavalier in just tossing them out.......And nothing I have mentioned has even broached the subject of fires (and forest fires) which are started this way.

It is a disgusting habit. Back many years ago when I was in the army, in classes during the day they would give us smoke breaks. The people who did not smoke had to police the area and pick up the butts that were thrown on the ground by the smokers.

Now that is stupid. People took up smoking so they did not have to pick up other people's butts.

I smoke, I have since I was 13. I was also raised on a tobacco farm and now I work for one of the biggest cigarette making companys in the world. Yes, smoking is addictive, but its also a choice! Tobacco money paid for my education, and its currently paying my bills. Yea, its a nasty habit, but its a persons choice to smoke.

you are right. first of all, cigarette butts are not biodegradable so they arent going to decompose. also, no matter where you walk, there are always trashcans and cig butt containers so there really is no need to throw them on the ground.
