That's called 'conditioning' in psychology.

It's like babies. They will cry when they know their moms are around, whenever they want to be held. When the mother leaves, or disappears from the child's sight, the child will stop crying, and cry again when it's mother comes back, but that's because they're used to be treated that way, and know that their mother will run to them at the sound of their cry.

It's the same with dogs then, they know that if they beg and give you those sad puppy eyes, you will give them what they want.

My dogs don't beg because they've learned that it gets them nowhere. Laying down quietly on the other side of the room, however, will get them a little treat when we're done eating.

Domestic dogs are different from wild canids. Just because a wild canid does something doesn't mean a dog will or will not do the same thing.

Dogs beg because they have been taught that is how they get fed. In the wild they steal food which is why if you leave your food on the counter and come back later its gone!

Humans teach dogs to beg. They don't know how in the wild
or when they are puppies.

However, if a dog comes over and sniffs your food and looks
curious, you might give it to him. Or maybe not. Maybe you
wait until he does something (such as a trick like sitting on his
rear with his feet up in the air).

Begging is learned behavior. If we rewarded dogs for sneezing,
we might well end up with dogs that can sneeze on command.

They beg because they know that we humans are suckers and that we will give in. It's a learned behavior. No, I don't think they begged in the wild.

They have been taught to beg for food by humans.
In the wild they fend for themselves
Ergo no need to beg
