I sent a letter from IL to GA with one First class stamp affixed and the post office returned it. Now how many cents is a first class stamp worth and how may do i need?

These stamps are confusing, as they are worth whatever the first class rate was when they were issued! They do NOT make the letter go any faster than using an ordinary stamp with numbers! If your stamp has the picture of the Statue of Liberty AND a flag, then it is worth 39c, the current rate for a one-ounce letter. If it has just the Statue of Liberty in blue or a flag with a farm field or close-ups of flowers, it's only worth 34c, so you need to add 5c in postage. If it has a closeup of the flag waving or old toys on it, it's woth 37c, and you need to add 2c in postage. To be sure, take it to the post office and ask what to do.

Right now a first class stamp is 39 cents. It covers a letter up to one ounce. If it's over an ounce, it costs more. If you take it to the post office, they will weigh it and tell you how much it will cost.

they give priority for the post to deliver....for rates go to uspostoffice site and see the rates as per the weight of the post.
