It depends on what the meat being used (if any) is and what type of sauce you're using.

If you are using seafood or chicken with an olive oil or pesto sauce, try an Italian white - maybe Pinot Grigio. If you're doing a cream based sauce, try a Sauvignon Blanc or an Unoaked Chardonnay.

For a red sauce, try a Merlot or a Bordeaux blend. Some Beaujolais' may not be too bad either.

The general rule is red wines with strong-flavored sauces (usually red sauces such as marinara), and white wines with more delicately-flavored sauces (usually white, but a red will stand up to an Alfredo sauce). In pasta, the meat/fish issue is less important than the sauce as far as wine selection is concerned.

Pishposh on all of the red with thises and white with thats.

The best wine to serve with pasta is the one you like the best. Pasta goes with anything, red white or rose. If you like the wine and you like the pasta, then enjoy!

I prefer a good red wine. I like Burgundy, or a good red dry table wine. I like Italian wine, of French wine. Usually my preference, is a good dry French wine, and no matter how many glasses you have, theres never any ill effects in the morning!

Chianti is a nice Italian wine that would be a classic with pasta.

Personally I like Merlot with lighter tomato sauces and a cabernet with more meaty sauces.

Ravenwood and Blackstone are great brands in the $50-$15 dollar range

I have a ton of wine and food pairing charts here -

If it's a red sauce, go with the red wines like chianti or zinfandel. if it's a white sauce or butter sauce, white wine is much better, like Chardonnay. If it's more of a garlic sauce go for a dryer white wine, maybe a Sauvignon Blanc.
