He's not horney, it just naturally comes out when he licks his tummy. It's like human babies, sometimes when you are giving them a bath or changing diapers they get a little "woodie". Nothing to worry about....It will still come out like that after he is neutered, when he has his bath...

First time I saw one I thought it was a growth or a worm (smile)

Your cat is not too young to be neutered. By the time you schedule the operation he will be around five months old anyway.
If you wait another two months you are looking at Thanksgiving and then, god forbid, Christmas. Humans get so busy around these times they just don't get that one done. Then the female cat gets out and gets pregnant or the male cat starts marking your home with his urine.

It really "pi***s me off that vets can be so hard-nosed about this issue. The Wynn Foundation did a long-term studies on the effects of early speutering in cats and found no deleterious ones.
Shelters have been doing early operations on kittens of two months, before letting them go to homes, for the last ten years.

Anyway, I don't know why your kitty is licking his penis. I had an older cat who would spike urines with a ph of up to nine. Very akaline and it burned him. I always took that as a sign he need a vet check.

Your kitty is way past being able to be fixed. He could have been fixed at 2 to 2.5 pounds. And yes, it is fine if your Maine Coon is 7 pounds at 4 months as long as he isn't fat. Maine Coons are very large cats. I have 2 females just over a year and they are almost 20 pounds each. Males will be larger. They continue to grow till they're about 3 years old.

The world record for the largest Maine Coon is a male in Illinois weighing in at 35 pounds and 48 inches tall from nose to tail.

The vet said he's too young to get fixed? You need to report that vet to his certifying agency for malpractice.

Kittens get spayed/neutered at about 8 wks of age. It's common practice for humane societies to do it as early as 6 wks, before they're adopted.

It's probably just a reflex and his positioning. Primates are the only mammals without an actual bone in the penis. It's probably just the way he's sitting when he does it causing the bone to protract forward and stick out.

It really aggravates me that your vet said he's too young to be neutered. Check the Winn Feline Foundation on early/spay neuter. Also the CFA site.

Many (most?) humane societies now alter kittens as young as 8 weeks, or 2 pounds. We raise Ragdolls and ALL my kittens are early spay/neutered at about 11 weeks old. The same is true of most reputable pedigree cat breeders.

Because we live in a rural area, it was tough to find a vet to do this early "spueter". I finally contacted the humane society in the local area & they gave me names (but not recommendations) on who performed this surgery. The first vet hospital I contacted recommended me to one other vet, who does the MOST early spueter. When I contacted that vet, she assured me that once a vet is used to pediatric surgery, it is actually simpler than an older cat. Further, the kittens recover faster!

There is a site for certified Feline Practitioners that can recommend a vet in your area that has troubled themselves to go for this additional certification.

In the meantime

a) your cat is NOT to young to be neutered, and in fact his hormones may be beginning to rage (like a teenager). :-)

b) Maine Coons are a VERY large breed, so his size is not abnormal, but instead *admirable* for his age! :-)

Yes it's normal for an undesexed male. Even 20 years ago males were neutered at 4 months, he's definately not too young. Find another vet who will desex him because it sounds like the testosterone is kicking in and he will start spraying soon.

This is not happening because he's horney but so he can keep it clean. He doesn't have hands to pull back a "foreskin" so when he is cleaning himself and getting close to his penis he runs over a nerve which contracts at the stimulation to push his penis out for cleaning. When he is finished it will relax slowly and go back in.

it is normal, just his body becoming grown up! They can "fix" him at 6 months, but it might not stop the problem...

And FYI maine coons get BIG!!
