I re-did my bedroom about 6 months ago and used a lot of antiques. I attached an antique screen door on the wall as my headboard. I also attached a set of exterior shutters on either side of the window inside. I bought an antique window and made a picture frame out of it, using pictures from when I was a child. I painted the walls a pretty pumpkin color and painted the closet doors in a lighter shade with a crackle finish over it to make it look distressed. I also painted my tv stand the same way I painted the closet doors. I also sanded around the edges of my chest of drawers to make it look distressed as well. It turned out very nice and I get a lot of compliments on it. It's very "warm and cozy"....=)

First and foremost choose colours that are restful to you. Each person responds to colour differently, although there are guidelines you can follow. For instance red is energizing(might snaz up the sex life if needed), green is soothing, orange will cause you to eat more(so not for kitchens or dining rooms if your on a diet) etc. So pick what you like!
Don't make a room you are going to sleep in too busy. If it needs to be multi purpose....hide things. An armoire can hide a multitude of toys- from TVs and all the things that go with, to a home office. When not in use, close it up and it is serene again. Bed side tables are great for hiding things too. As is under bed storage... and who ever has enough storage?
Above all a bedroom should reflect YOU. Mine is cobalt blue with wood and silver ceiling tiles used as wainscoting, and is themed with butterflies and blades(swords and the like). Not many people would find it restful, but I love it. Decorate yours for you alone (unless you share, then for the two of you only).

Choose a neutral color palatte that can be easily adapted through accessories. Try black/white/steel grey or beige/cream. With the first palatte, you could accessorize in vibrant colors or nautical tones. With the second, you could add cool spring pastels or warmer autumn tones.
Now is a good time to shop for linen, because lots of styles are on clearance as they prepare for fall merchandise. Adding a plant to your space brings it alive and helps keep the air fresh and clean. In this months' Jane magazine there's a fantastic idea for turning an old cuckou clock into something totally modern- you should check that out.
Basically, just keep it simple and add interest through accessories. This gives you the flexibility to change your mind next year without losing a lot of money.

Make sure you dust every thing before you start to paint. I mean every thing! And paint it a light colors so it lighter. Don't pick red, it is to aggressive of a color and you'll get tired of it
