Is there a switch available, or some type of equipment, that will switch a phone line to being off the hook or busy?

I am trying to avoid the beeping sound when I take my phone off the hook. My reason for doing this is to enable "Busy Line Transfer" to forward my calls, which is cheaper than "Call Forwarding".

Thank you.

you should have a switch on the bottom or side of the phone ringer on or off. Take a look then move the dial or switch.
Another thing you can do is take the plug out of the wall socket, the phone will still ring and your calls will be transfered, and your phone won't ring - the caller does not get a busy signal, because the line is still coming into your house. You will need to plug the phone back in if you want to make a call.

If you were to connect a volt/ohm meter in series with your telephone line, and measure the resistance of when you pick up the handset, you could build a circuit with a resistor and a switch that once thrown would emulate the resistance of an off hook condition (esentially a short circuit with resistance).

On-Hook Minimum dc resistance between tip (green wire) and ring (red wire) conductors of 30,000 Ohms.

Off-Hook Maximum dc resistance between tip (green wire) and ring (red wire) conductors of 200 Ohms.

An easier solution would be to take the phone off hook and then uplug the handset or remove the receiver capsule so you can't hear the beeping.
