How do I hold a successful benefit dinner?

Question

thinking about having people bring relief items instead of paying, but I still have to pay for food and all. Want to help, but do not have a lot of money myself. Don't want to get in over my head.

Why does it have to be a dinner?

You could charge money and hold a talent show or fashion show, or even do a raffle. Holding a dinner can get you in a spot where you owe for all this food and drink, and don't even break even nevermind get enough to make the donation you're thinking about.
