I personally have never had one but my uncle did and it was a disaster, my ex father in law also had a couple and they were both were disasters so I would have to say no.

I met my partner on line and we have been together for 4 years now. We chatted online for about a month before meeting. To be honest when you meet the real person obviously they are going to be different to the person you imagined but this is REAL LIFE. What's important is whether the two real people are still attracted to each other.
Of course it can work. There is no such thing as a perfect partner so you need to aim for someone who is at least 75% perfect. You need to be realistic just as with anything in life. In reality there are probably several thousand perfect partners for you out there but what is the chance of meeting any of them socially WITHOUT the internet? .. pretty slim I'd say.
Think of it like Ebay. If you are selling something in a local shop you might get one customer in a week,. By using Ebay you get thousands.
What are the chances of sitting in some bar and the perfect partner just walks in the door? ..You'd have to wait a long time I think?

Not at all I answered a question last week on this site and started up with a girl who is all I could possibly dream of typing to. How have you put yourself across?. Pardon the expression, cos that might have something to do with the fact that you are only getting replies from weirdos. Have a good think about your on screen personality and see if it really matches who you really are.

Sometimes I think we need something so much that we clutch at straws. It is easy to read what you want to read into the words in an email or chat room .The reality can be a disappointment.
I don't think we should give up hope though. being lonely doesn't always make you a weirdo. Be wary but keep an open mind.

You hear some really bad stuff about internet dating but to be honest i think you are more at risk meeting a stranger on a fri/sat night in a club or bar where more than likely you are drunk and vunerable! you could go to any guys place,or vice versa,or even just allowing him/her to walk you home is a risk when you know nothing about this person and yet apparently this is safer???
I joined FRIENDS REUNITED DATING in july last year, I had varios dates some good and some bad but nothing unsafe. In october i met a guy from oxford ( I lived 180 mile away in suffolk) and he was keen to meet me,he drove to see me and we hit it off instantly!! we dated and between us drove the distance and in jan 06 i moved to oxford to be with him. We are currently house hunting and planning to get married next year!!

I don't know, but for my eldest daughter's sake (she's 23) I hope it works as she is due to marry soon an American she met on the Internet. She's English. She has been over to the USA a couple of times to meet so here's hoping.

I suppose you could find your perfect match on the Internet, but you could just as easily meet someone special anywhere I personally use the Internet to chat and see how the rest of the world is doing and to Kill time, in my boring life.

Yes I have met several women on the net. We chatted for quite bit and in some cases we met for a sexual encounter. They have all been very attractive intelligent ladies who I was glad to have had the opportunity to encounter.
In some case we met several times.
The main drawback is distance.
