For example just outside your bedroom door while you are sleeping. Or somewhere else you are likely to walk and have to step over it. Our cat does this several times a day every day. What is she trying to say?

She is telling you she loves you. This is her gift to you. If she could actually catch a bird or rodent that would be your present but since she is indoors you get her toys.

Lucky you, enjoy as you cat is trying to enclude you in it sometimes dull world. As time goes on the cat will train you to pick up and toss. After four yrs my guy has learning that if the soft ball or mouse is in my path I will pick it up and he chases it. He will follow it to the basement than carry it to the same room I am sitting in. He drops it and when he knows I see him, he moves away. I have to get out of my chair and throw it again. Through the months I believe he is dropping the ball closer to me. A few cats catch on the that trick just like a puppy.

that she captured this toy and is giving it to you as a present! They put it where you can see it and when she does it, acknowledge it!! She is saying that you are top cat and that she caught it for you. My cat use to put her toys in my boyrfirends shoes!! he would find them in the morning when he got ready for work!
If she was an outside cat, it would be dead birds and mice and stuff she is dropping at your feet!!

outdoor cats do this with Live prey that they have caught. the cat thinks hes doing good for the owner

Indoor cat doing this - Same reason but with something like as you say with a toy.

Bringing you a present so it can be rewarded

Probably bringing you a "gift". Outdoor cats will go out and catch mice and birds and lay them on the doorstep for you. It's their way of showing that they love you and want to give you things. :)

Cats love to leave their beloved (you) little gifts. House cats often do not get to bring you their fresh kill...bugs,lizards, mice, birds...so they leave you what you have substituted for them. Mine like to leave them in their water bowl like they are trying to keep the toy hydrated.

It's your cat's way of giving you a gift. Just tell her/him how smart they are!

He is giving you a "gift", and wants to play with you. Have fun with him, and give him praise for giving you his gift.
