Of course! It's actually been very much cleaned up over the past several years. The subways are fine and the streets are fine, except in obviously dangerous areas which nobody with any sense would go into anyway. If in any doubt, ask a native. We're actually quite friendly. :)
I can't imagine that your explorations (backed up with a little planning) would take you anywhere near the "bad places." In fact, there's no need whatsoever to take escorted tours unless you're determined to be fed information you can get from any guide book, or are pining to throw your money away on cheesy, boring excursions with other tourists.
Just don't use the term "black gangs" and you'll be fine. :)

New York is a huge State. It depends on where you are going to venture. If you are headed to New York City, then take precautions, stick with the tour group, and do not venture out alone, if you do, make sure you know how to get back.
Up State New York is nice, and quiet, more laid back, nice for touring and learning about it's historical sites and such.
Long Island, New York is divided into to huge counties, Nassau and Suffolk County. It is quiet and reserved in some locale's, every country, state, city, and county have their good and bad parts just like any other part of the country.
you just have to use common sense, go on your gut instinct, and enjoy your vacation. Don't focus so much on the negative, that will destroy your whole purpose of your trip!

New York has one of the lowest crime rates of any city in the United States. In Manhattan you can feel very safe to walk anywhere that you wish without a problem. People always exagerate, and unfortuately, it's usually for the worst. Check out the crime statistics, and keep in mind that there are over 800,000 people that live in the city. Oh yes, and the little crime that does happen involves the the Mafia, The Asian mobs, White and Latino gangs, Crooked Cops and a lot of white-collar crime as well, not just black gangs. That is an over-exageration as well.
I have to say that NYC is one of the best places to vist in the world you will have tons of fun and you will feel safe the whole time! There are people everywhere at all times of night, and you should have a marvelous time! Don't let any of the stories fool you!

Lets not confuse number of crimes with crime rate. The tri-sate area has about 20 million people therefore a lot of crimes are committed. Lots of people equals lots of crime. However, if you look at the number of murders per 100000 people New York is not that dangerous (7 in 2004) . It's actually much better now than twenty even thirty years ago and safer than other much smaller American cities such as Kansas City, Memphis, Denver, Phoenix...
If you look at the most dangerous cities, you will be hard pressed to find a major city in the top 20. The myth that big cities are dangerous, small cities are safe is false!
Don't believe me?

NYC as many major cities in the world has danger zones even to the own citizen.
Visit and ask some specific questions to www.visitnyc.org it's the best site I know about NY
10 years ago was a nightmare to walk at any time of the day thru 42 ST. now is close to heaven. I've visited that beautiful city with 10 years elapsed and now the change of view and the confort is huge...
I recommend to go relaxed, There's a 10% of violence that used to be daily on any streets, even on Teather District.
Have a nice trip

You will be fine that city has so much energy you will love it. Stay off of the subways after dark and always act as if you are comfortable and know where you are even if you aren't and don't. Watch yourself if you feel unsure about something move to where there are people step into a deli or flag a cab. In the event you are mugged or think you may be scream FIRE and run like hell. Visit everywhere have tea at the plaza or Sunday brunch. Visit Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero. See the village and walk around in Central Park. Go to Macy's' and Bloomingdale's. Pick up a map of NYC and get on the Internet search and write up an itinerary. Remember if you love Italian food visit Lombardi's' on Spring St if you love Chinese so to Chinatown to Wo Hops. Shop on Delancy for bargains and remember to bargain or shop on 14th St. for really good bargains. If you love soul food take a cab to Sylvia's' check out Birdland if its still open. Wish I was still there I would show you around. Don't forget to see a Broadway Show buy your tickets in the middle of time square at TCKTS. Don't miss the empire state building as you so often see it now instead of the twin towers. Have a really good time. A million people live there its not that dangerous.

I'm pretty sure NYC is considered to be one of (if not THE ) safest big city. I've been walking around the city by myself since I was in my early teens. If you feel uncomfortable on a certain street, there's usually a reason. Stay where the people are, don't go wandering around alone late at night. I feel like it's the same as nearly any town. I wouldn't go for a walk through the park in my neighborhood in the middle of the night, just like people shouldn't go strolling through central park at the same time. It's all a matter of common sense... New York is extremely safe.

The people are especially nice and we enjoyed outself immensly. I went back several more times and now I make it a point to go twice a year. I've been to London. San Francisco and Miami to name a few and I am now one of those who say..'I LOVE NEW YORK"
Go, enjoy yourself and don't forget to try the cheesecake.

Listen, here's the real deal: use your common sense. Don't go out by yourself at night - use the buddy system - especially if you're going partying. Arrive with a friend and leave with that friend. During the day, most areas are safe - if you look for trouble you will find it, and if you act like a scared little rabbit, you'll be targeted. Act like you know what you're doing and where you're going - even if you don't. Give off a "don't f*ck with me" vibe and you'll blend in. That said, don't be the poodle who thinks it's a rottweiler.
If you want to visit a particular area and aren't sure about it - ask your hotel conceirge - that's what they get paid to know.
