Straight citric acid.
Citric acid is a weak organic acid found in citrus fruits. It is a natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic (sour) taste to foods and soft drinks. In biochemistry, it is important as an intermediate in the citric acid cycle and therefore occurs in the metabolism of almost all living things. It also serves as an environmentally benign cleaning agent and acts as an antioxidant.
Citric acid exists in a variety of fruits and vegetables, but it is most concentrated in lemons and limes, where it can comprise as much as 8% of the dry weight of the fruit.

it's called "smoeletrekkers" -- "face-pullers" if you translate it literally -- a kind of candy in the form of a little red ball ...which you can hardly buy in stores anymore, but was around when I was little

i think that would have to be NEEM...it's a kind of tree you find here in Africa...you make tea out of it..it's good for healing all sorts of diseases..but it's disgusting...even before you drink it you feel like puking.....but there's other stuff i've swallowed that's really sour..like bile....you know the liquid in your stomach that helps in digesting....yeah...you normally taste it when you're sick and you feel like puking....it's not the best thing ever....
