I am an atheist and don't really care who call is what but it seems to me like most people who say this are just looking for a fight. I mean if you say atheism is a religion because you believe God doesn't exist, then you haven't really thought it through. It is not believing in God. Not believing isn't believing something is not. It takes no belief, that's the point.

And let's look at the word. A: a prefix meaning none, or the abscence of, the: a Latin root for religion or God more indirectly. So the word itself means the abscence of religion. Not very religious, putting aside most atheists don't believe for logic based reasons, not for a difference in beliefs.

Again, it doesn't bother me, you can call me whatever you want, I don't care, but I thought I'd put my two cents in. So restating the question, how does atheism constitue religion?

I'd like to add that if you think atheists really do believe but just don't like it, you're wrong. This is pretty small minded too, to not be able to accept that some one thinks different than you do. So please don't answer this way.

Platin, thanks for clearing that up for me. I haven't studied language for awhile but I remembered they meant somthing in one of those old languages. I still don't think it's a religion.

wehwalt, oh no I said the wrong language, I guess I am a bumbling moron. I'll go put my helmet on in case I get two ancient languages confused again.

I desire people who weren't pagans could give up answering questions approximately paganism. Pagan religions do not handle atheism that's the location that there are actually not any supernatural deities. in comparison to monotheistic religions, pagan religions do not proselytize. In different words, pagans do not care regardless of if somebody else turns right into a pagan. i will attempt to sparkling up particularly some the incorrect claims that have been made right here. a million) Paganism and pantheism are actually not an identical factor. 2) Pagans are polytheists who have faith in diverse man or woman diverse deities (gods and goddesses). 3) that's impossible to be the two a pagan and an atheist. the guy who claimed to be the two an atheist and a pagan would not have a clue what a pagan is. 4) Pagans do not worship nature. Pagans revere nature. there's a distinction. 5) Polytheism isn't the theory that plant existence have spirits. the guy who made this declare would not know the version between animism and paganism. 6) Buddhism isn't a faith. 7) Pagan is a ordinary classification for any of particularly some nature-based, polytheistic religions. Paleo-pagan refers to historical pre-Christian nature-based polytheistic religions. Neo-pagan refers to well-known variations of historical nature-based polytheistic religions. Any faith that would not fall into this classification isn't pagan. as an occasion, strictly conversing, Wicca isn't a neo-pagan faith. Wicca isn't a well-known version of any historical nature-based faith (regardless of the claims of many Wiccans) and is not polytheistic. Wicca is duotheistic and teaches that all and sundry deities are manifestations of the Goddess. there is no historical pagan faith that worshipped "the Goddess". as a replace, they worshipped many separate, man or woman, diverse goddesses and gods. regrettably, lots of the incorrect concepts approximately paganism has been unfold with the aid of Wiccans. they have even surpassed the incorrect information unfold with the aid of Christians approximately pagans.

You're wrong. Athiesm is the *DISbelief* in god, rather than having a lack of belief in god. The latter is agnosticism (as I'm an agnostic).

And even agnosticism CAN be a belief. There are two types of agnostics: those who don't know, and those who don't know and either don't want to know, or feel that it's impossible to know (which I am). The first is really more along the lines of undecided. That's not a religion. The second two are belief systems ABOUT belief, and as thus are a religion.

If you believe that god doesn't exist, you are acting on faith, or on inconclusive evidence. To be fair, people put their faith in things all the time: the theories of science for instance. Is science a religion? No, I guess not. So we have to ask ourselves what defines a religion. Really, athiesm is faith in no god. And if religion is about the nature of the universe from a creation/divine standpoint, that's definitely a faith in something relating to religion.

Atheism comes from Greek roots. You are right that "a" means no, but "the" definitely means god. Also, please do not confuse the terms "god" and "religion". God can be the center or object of a religion, but the religion itself is a system of beliefs or worship of the object. Atheism makes the positive assertion that God doesn't exist. Atheists BELIEVE that God doesn't exist, just as Christians and other theists BELIEVE that God does exist.

On a sidenote, the way many scientists talk of Darwin, you'd think they were priests fighting against the heretics (Intelligent Design advocates).

Exactly.

a, an - not, without
theo, the - God
ism - quality,state
ist - one who practices

Here is a link to Latin root words.
never mind. they have removed "a" and "the" from that list. Wonder why

Atheists do not "worship" them selves so much as have self preservation. All animals do. Saying that all humans worship something implies that all humans have a need for religion.

The word 'atheism' and is based on Greek, not Latin. Your weird statement about Latin is founded on ignorance of Latin and much more. It is the typical windbag attempt to play verbal games that are like stage magic to fool the masses. [Theos - Greek second declention noun. Deus - Latin second decelension noun] 'A' is a Greek, not a Latin prefix.

Your knowledge of philosophical thought is about as accurate. You wave your ignorance like a ragged flag with pride.

O cynocephale, non nobis molestare stulto tuo!

It is a religion in so far as self-worship and it is a belief that there is no God.
