In GENERAL French wines are considered the best in the world. But for any specific wine this is not always true. Individual wines from other areas can often surpass the French equivalent. In a recent blind wine tasting, five California wines were judged best against similar French varieties. Find a wine reference (Robert Parker, Wine Spectator magazine) and use that as a guide rather than any general criterion.

there's no such thing as the best wines in the world. today's bottle is my favourite although i do pine for some star vintages from yesterdays. Alas the velvety cab/sauvs the spicy shirah the warm and fruity viogner. i weep for the comfort of a friendly merlot the love of a real true champagne. Wines, my friend, are the melody of the meal, the sauce that flavours the plate. How to place any over the others. clams and linguine in tomato sauce without a chianti shear torture. And yes I cherish the french winemakers masterpieces yet there is liquid from all around this globe.
