And do you write this because you're proud of being an atheist? And how stupid do you think you look to those who are still Christians? I fail to see how it could possibly be any more intelligent to be an atheist than it is to be a Christian. It is all a matter of FAITH, not of intelligence. Perhaps you feel this way because you are insecure and unsure that atheism is really the answer. However you got turned on to the idea of atheism, I would suggest it happened at a time when you were most vulnerable to the trappings of the human world we live in for a very short time. It can't possibly be a pleasant way to go through life, believing that there's absolutely nothing beyond the insanity and extreme shortcomings of the earth. Perhaps you ran into some really poor examples of Christians that turned you off of the whole thing. I can't think of any other reason you'd turn around and call such a large swath of humanity stupid.

My mom feels the same way except she was a Jehovah's Witness and the reason she feels that way is because her mother was such I wack job that she is ashamed of being in contact with people like her. YOU on the other hand might feel as though being a Christian made you narrow minded and believe something that you now think is ridiculous and you feel stupid for believing that way in the first place. I don't feel that way at all and am a proud Christian but I know where your coming from.

The sad thing is - you should be ashamed that the devil took over and you believed all his lies.
God is real and what you learned as a Christian is real - People are not stupid for believing. What is stupid is not believing and thinking that just because some scientist or someone thinks they have a theory that God doesn't exist - believing him is stupid. If they could prove that God wasn't real- then they wouldn't spend so much time trying to prove it.
You need to re-think your decision. I think you feel dumb now because you want justification on your change of thought.

Don't blame yourself. Religion is sort of inherited from one's parents/guardians and the rest of society. As a child anyway, it'd be odd if you WEREN'T a christian. Minds are always developing; yours merely wasn't capable of achieving your current perspective on enlightenment until you became an Athiest. If nothing else, you can cast off the beliefs of your former self, and claim that you no longer are that same entity. If you fear reverting back into the state of being a Christian, ask yourself why? For while the arguement "Well Athiests, what have you got to lose by being a Christian?" doesn't hold up for the purposes of believing in it as truth, it does meet the arguement of what one has to fear.

It would seem you look to the past or to the future, and do not like what you were, or what you might become. But as an athiest, you need not worry about death, for when you are dead in the ground, you're dead in the ground. You look forward to that, and do you sense fear? You should not; perhaps you do not like the idea of being dead in the ground, but when it happens, it happens, and you won't be "un-okay" with it. So too the case with when you were Christian, and were okay with it, and so too with the case of your future, shall you be okay with it. Do not worry about your past and your future, as the former has already gone and been dealt with, and the future can be dealt with in the frame of mind that most benefits you at the time.

But then again, what do I know? I'm agnostic.

Why? I myself am a former christian being raised that way but I'm not ashamed of it. Every experience in your life is unique to you; without them you would not be who you are today. Change one thing in the past and the here and now would be different. If you like whom you have become now why is there need to be ashamed of the past?

You are feeling embarrassed because you realize you had fallen for BS and it seems like it should not have happened.

Think of it this way - you fell into the Dark Side (religion) because you lacked the knowledge and ability to prevent it at the time. But you finally solved the puzzle and got out.
Most people do not.
You did.
You win.

Don't focus on the "know you were stupid" thing. What measures and defines you now is that you got smart.

The first book of Corinthians, chapter 3 verse 19 says
'For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God'.
The reason you feel u were stupid before is because u are looking at your former self from a worldly standpoint,
And by the world's standards, Christians are stupid!
It is better to be wise in God's eyes and stupid/foolish in this world's.You were His sheep and so innocent and foolish like a child. You have to be like a child to get into God's Kingdom.
Psalm 14 verse 1 says 'Only fools say in their hearts, there is no God,they are corrupt and their actions are evil...'.
Repent b4 it's too late, He is the One who gave you life! The devil wants to steal, kill and destroy you!

Christianity isn't looked kindly upon by Atheists. Probably the number one target.

Plus, most of the folks leading the "battle" against Naturalistic Humanism's origin story, Evolution, are young earth creationist Christians. So it's natural that you feel ashamed of what you previously regarded as truth.

Or, alternately, you're ashamed because you feel you may be persecuted for your previous beliefs.

How long ago was it that you left Christianity? If it was recent, I have a possible answer: Guilt. Deep down inside you have some guilt about leaving your former religion behind so you're trying to deny and bury it by bashing your former faith by saying it's "stupid". I think a lot of people who leave one religion for another belief (or lack thereof) go through a period where they try their best to be as anti-(insert name of religion here) in order to bury their guilt and justify their feelings somehow. You'll get past it (I hope).
