Because they are machines whose functioning (move through the 'air') is based on 'planes' that work in such a way (a whole subject in itself) that allow the airplane to lift off and fly. And those planes -or air-planes- are the wings, of course!

The plane part of it is based of the shape of the wing, its a plane, in this case a wing. The air part is apparently the place where it uses the wings at.

Maybe because they're planes that fly in the air. I'm not for sure, just a guess.
